How did the car catch fire? Was the kangaroo smoking and carelessly dropped a lit fag as it was hit by the car?

Not heard of a car catching fire before but I'm not surprised.
Some Roos can be huge Censored . If hit, they can cause a lot of damage to a car.

Travelling around Australia there were various regions of the outback over tens of kilometres long where there was a dead kangaroo every 50 metres, quite often in pairs. Mum & child!

I was a bit surprised at the shear number as traffic stops at night & next to no traffic dawn & dusk because of the risk of hitting one or two kangaroos. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

From memory, the roos cross the road in packs, so hit one hit several. The trucks still travel at night, and "roo bars" are fitted for a reason.
Same thing in rural Turkey. No-one except trucks drives at night, partly because the roads are unsafe, with hazards like holes and missing bridges not always marked, and partly because the trucks often have no lights. In the morning in the more rural areas you will find plenty of carnage from the night before. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

We often slept overnight in gravel pits next to main roads. They do not sound nice but they are practical & often the best place to stop. You see a caravan or two pulled up in one about 4 pm for the end of the day. Often you can find the old disused gravel pits which are overgrow & look quite nice. They are all a maximum of 50 metres from the road unless they are the extra large ones.

We also got pretty good at not using the gravel pits marked on wikicamps as these were not as nice. Found a massive one between Wave Rock to Esperance.

Also transmission repeater towers are good places & you can get a bit further away from the road.

There are basically no cars or trucks through the entire night around Australia in the north, west & southwest.
