"If you are coming through the Blackwall tunnel I pity you, it is bad enough getting to and from Canary Wharf from the north."

Agree. After I retired I was offered a very lucrative temp job north of the river, theoretically 20 minutes drive away, but it would have taken over an hour to get there in rush hour and I couldn't face it. That was ten years ago and it's got worse. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months

I get to the tunnel at just before 6am or 6pm depending upon whether I'm on an early or night shift. Either way it's moving slowly. Would move quicker if there wasn't the constant lane hopping Sad

Toxteth is Liverpool
Dover, once upon a time, wasn't so bad; I think it's deteriorated with the influx of migrants through the port, legally or otherwise.
No disputing the London crime rate; pretty much every 'ne'er do well' carries a knife and has no qualms about using it.

Don't forget that London is very large and very varied. Most people tend to get to know their area and feel pretty safe. I had no problem walking around SE London, including some of the dodgier bits, but was less confident in areas I didn't know. A lot of the crime is against people who aren't street wise (walking along staring at their phone, or reading a map - might as well shout "I am a tourist") or is contained within small sections of the community. On the whole the kids won't knife you unless you're an obvious potential muggee. They're far more interested in knifing each other. And they generally only shoot each other too, although they are so bad at it they nail the occasional passer-by as well.
As someone who works in London hosting conferences mainly for "out-of-townies", it's amusing (and exasperating) that people object to a venue in some of the gentrified up and coming areas, but are quite happy to go to places that they've heard of, which were posh twenty years ago but now are distinctly seedy.
What I miss is the friendly feeling of knowing most of your neighbours and having decent shops nearby and all-night buses (or indeed ANY buses). What I don't miss is the terrible air pollution - out here in the Fens I really am much healthier.
Oh, and driving in London may be a pain, but as far as cycling goes it's far far safer than out here in the country, with the narrow roads, very fast traffic and not many quiet side-roads to use as alternative routes. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Too many CG and all big detached with no real gardens and limited parking. The local services wont' be able to cope in North Yorkshire at this rate. The developers are not interested in build homes for the youngsters looking for a first home near work. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

A public enquiry has just finished and depending on that will determine our final home, had thoughts of North of Harrogate but Harrogate is now gridlocked most of the day and all these new 5 bedroomed boxes being built within 10 miles is going to hit the hospitals and other services.

Its the same everywhere - from Nuneaton to Skipton - houses going up on crowded sites - no attention paid to the impact on traffic congestion, schools, GP surgeries etc
And not a first time buyers house in amongst as far as I can see. Affordable housing - my arse

its all about the profit (and back handers to the planning committee) Jules

Our village needs more houses or the primary school will close, but then it becomes an addiction as the school needs to get bigger every year. At work
