As a young children on trips to London we used to count the number of police we saw as in those days there was one on almost every street corner. A few years later we used to count the number of black/asian people we saw*. Things are different now and it is difficult to know which group, if any, it would be possible to count. One thing you no longer see in London is the many bomb sites and burned out buildings that we saw on those trips shortly after the war.

Live in sarf-East London-sur-mer and work just north of the Blackwall Tunnel, a commute of around 5 miles e/w and I can assure mcsimmo that sadly it’s like that pretty much everyday.

You can't. English is both an ethnicity and a nationality. So an English person is a native of England ie simply someone born in England. However, some English people have an English ethnicity from ancestry going back to the old English- tribes derived from the Germanic Angles. So being English is not dependant on your skin colour. One small way to eliminate non-English from English people is that if they have a mobile phone glued to their ear and are having a VERY LOUD conversation in a foreign language then the chances are they are not English. Avoiding the national habit of queuing by pushing to the front is another clue as is the constant habit of stating loudly "IN MY COUNTRY" they do it this way/it is better than here/the beer is better in my country/the weather is better in my country/your food is .

I remember one extended trip to the far north with a minibus of SE London schoolboys. One game they played was "spot the fat socialist British Rail worker". Happy days... Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

If you are coming through the Blackwall tunnel I pity you, it is bad enough getting to and from Canary Wharf from the north. |
