Oil for Si6 HSE

I just had my side steps installed today and while there I enquired about what oil I should use to top-up between services.

I quote...

"You can't buy it in Australia. The only place you can get it from is a Land Rover service centre."

"If you need a top-up just bring it in and we'll do it for you."

????????????? and... ??????????????

The i6 uses 0W 30 fully synthetic oil. Any make of oil to that soec will be fine in my opinion. The only issue you have is it's not advisable to mix brands of oil and therefore you really need to top up with the same oil. I suggest writing to LR customer services. All sounds a bit strange to me. I bought oil from my dealer the other day for my diesel. I think I'll call LR Australia and see what they say.

I have chased Land Rover Australia and Castrol Australia - the recommended oil supplier - about the availability (or otherwise!) of the specified 0w-30 oil. Castrol only import it for Land Rover and it is only available in 20 litre packs. I spoke to five Land Rover agents, 3 in Victoria, 1 in NSW, and 1 in Queensland. None use the specified oil in servicing, their choices ranging from Mobil 1 to Shell, but no Castrol 0w-30. One dealership, who is also a VW dealer, stocks VW branded 0w-30, but it is not to the A5-B5 standards stipulated.Anyway, to cut a long story short, Land Rover Australia customer services, who are helpful, couldn't really explain why Land Rover were specifying an oil which you can't get here, but stated that Castrol Edge 5W-30 was OK for the petrol engine. I understand that this engine is used by Volvo in 2 Australian models, the S80 and the new X60; doe's anyone know which oil Volvo specify? In any event, my Freelander gets its' first service next week (700k round trip, must be mad) and I'll stick with whatever oil the dealership fills it up with. I must say I am delighted with the car, my first Land Rover.

Land Rover dealership carried out first service and filled engine -petrol - with Castrol Magnatec 5w-40 so that's what I'll be sticking with. At least it's freely available!
