Can anyone offer any advice on the best way to use the built in Sat Nav to stop it taking us down narrow country lanes when towing

Yet again last week the stupid thing lead us down a narrow single track road with 24ft of caravan behind us. we have the scratches on the van to prove it

I have looked at portable Sat Nav's designed for the purpose but they are big money for occasional use so want to make sure I'm not missing something before I decided to shell out £300 on one.

Get a road map and stick to A and B roads with a Van on the back. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Choose the most suitable from the three route options given, the shortest one is the one to avoid but check it out with a paper map.

You can get very good caravan/truck satnav`s for about £30-£40 on Ebay. They come with the latest maps and work very well. I had one in my previous Freelander 1 and fitted it into the dash and wired a reversing camera into it as well. You can pick the vehicle type from the menu and it will avoid low bridges, narrow streets etc. Might be worth a look.

When you have a built in system that comes with a package with no choice you expect it to work, LR prides itself on building a car that is a superior vehicle for towing and then put in a basic satnav, there should have been extra avoid options.
My HSE it does have an unwelcome avoid option, it's called Cyprus, seems it's not part of the EU the satnav doesn't work here though post 2013 satnavs will for an extra charge.
So much for world wide support, perhaps that's the reason there are multitudes of FL1's and very few FL2's out here my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I remember hearing about an American serviceman based in Germany, he bought a top US Spec Disco from the military dealer on the base, with a view to exporting back to the states when his posting was up.
But the Satnav was for Europe as it was purchased in Germany... when he went to enquire about switching it to US Maps he was told that he would have to pay for a complete new satnav system as it was DVD based and wouldn't work with US regional discs.

That actually is just a software change, though most companies deny it can be changed there are quite a few people that can change the region, there are no built in switches normally but there have been some DVD players that are selectable. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I think it's a matter of common sense and navigational experience. If you travel a route regularly but not enough to remember the precise route then you can put in "weypoints" which might be known or familiar landmarks, towns, intersections, etc. which will by-pass cross country narrow roads. Additionally, if your sat-nav guides you off a main road onto a B,C, or D road, you have the option to ignore and keep going; the sat-nav will quickly recalculate a revised route. You can also select types of highway you prefer in "route options". And finally, if you are aware of a cross country route liable to have narrow roads, you can select an "avoid point" in the shape of various sized squares.

Can you set it to most ecenomic, that usually keeps you on bigger roads. 2010 Freelander2 TD4_e GS

Thanks for all the input so far everyone I am aware of the 3 route options and will experiment in the future with that. I assume it will always opt for the 1st one unless changed which will be shortest/quickest ?

What it's done on the last two occasions is take me down a road which is OK but the bloody thing gets you to a point of no return and takes you down a lane This happened last week when travelling/towing from Grantham to Lowestof. About 30 miles from Lowestoft it took me off the A road and down a B road then take a right which turned into a single track lane after a while On this occasion the caravan sustained some scratch damage and a couple of tiny dents on the O/S which is bloody annoying. 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

 I've decided to stop being a good example and will now just be a terrible warning.....

sat navs are only any good if you know where you are going, especialy over long distances in remote or rural areas . map first sat nav second
