Freelander 2 turning over but not starting

First post...Hoping someone can help,

Not driven my Freelander 2 (2007 td4 automatic) for a few weeks, went to turn it on today and it turns over but doesn't actually start.

I get the following info on the screen
-systems check in progress
-hdc fault system not available
-reduced engine performance

Just before reduced engine performance notification comes up the ignition process is stopped by the Freelander.

Any ideas?
Ive tried jumping to no avail so it's currently just sat on my drive...

Thanks,
L

It sounds like your battery is knackered can you test it and how old is it?

Cheers Archie, what makes you say battery?

I've not got a voltmeter to test but can find one.

Sounds like the starter motor is going and turning over it just doesn't catch.if I turn ignition on etc than all electric seems to work on inside (lights, radios etc) and tried jumping starting it.

No idea on battery, brought the Freelander last year. But did have some issues starting in the winter when it was proper chilly

If these are left unused, say a month plus the car can protectt the main ECU by shutting down. If being left they need a trickle charge. Not that sure what the wake up procedure is.

If your vehicle was a poor starter in the Winter a new battery seems to be in order and possibly glow plugs and a extra earth lead. Once that is done the work needed really gets more intense if you still have problems, may need a solenoid kit.

When was the fuel filter last changed ? When was it last serviced ?

Also jump leads on modern cars is asking for more trouble. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

The message you get is in general a warning the battery isn't much good if you use the search box there's been a lot of post's. 5 to 6 year's is about average for the FL2 battery. The initial start for a diesel needs a fair bit of grunt from the battery.

Thanks both,

No sign of a fuel filter change in receipts etc, service is due in sept. I'll try an get the local garage to come out tomorrow to check battery.

As it's a 2007, if batteries do go for about 5 years then its about bang on for the second change

Fingers crossed it's the battery

So got the local garage to come around today.

Initially it was showing low voltage, but diagnostics showed it was a faulty crank shaft sensor. For some reason this sensor was taking the voltage from the battery on start up. New sensor is in (£120) and now starts straight away

But turns out it's the existing initial battery from 2007 ..... So will get that changed before it gives up on me.

Thanks for support 👍

Thumbs Up Impressed they could fault find the exact fault. Thumbs Up

Get a diesel filter fitted on a full service quite soon and that new battery will pay dividends come Winter. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
