My Audi TT failed its MoT yesterday on one item - "Oil leaking excessively from engine".

In fact, this was nothing more than a little drip from the oil filter (needed tightening 1/8 of a turn) and some unidentifiable oil at the back of the engine, probably from a leaky cam cover.

The leakage is certainly no worse than it's been for the last several years, without so much as an advisory about it, so I'm wondering if they have tightened up the MoT rules recently?

if so, those of us with high-mileage Land Rovers may be in for a shock!

This is the actual fail criteria. Did it meet that?

75mm in 5 mins - that's a pretty major leak!

This is where a good small local tester is worth his weight in gold. I use the garage in the village which I've used for years, and faced with the above issue the tester there would have tightened up the filter free of charge and passed the car. In fact mine once went in with badly rusted inner faces on the front discs (calipers can't have been sliding properly on the rails). I got a call from the garage, not to say it had failed, but that it wouldn't be ready for lunch time as the front discs needed replaced and "we're on with that now". Got the car back a couple of hours later with a clean pass and new brakes.

Unless it's family or a very good friend, I’d never go ahead and replace a set discs and pads after an MOT without asking the customer first.

Oh, and they should have failed it first - you are not allowed to carry out any repairs on faults of that magnitude discovered during the test until after you have finished the test. So, test, fail, repair, retest, pass.  Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Can I ask where to find that? I've searched the internet in vain....

Re-reading your original post, they have tightened the rules up this year and a car can be failed for excessive oil leaks but still, 75mm in 5 minutes is some puddle.

Well utterly unimpressed with new MOT system as just took mine and it passed BUT all I got was a sheet of A4 with PASS on make and reg of car,mileage and the name of garage which looks like it could have been printed from anywhere and looks well open to fraud. No read outs for emissions, No stamp from garage. Very poor.

Service at stealer no better,not even a tick box of what they done.

Online some of us still like details. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Don’t know where you’ve been mate but it’s been like that for at least 10 years now. You don't get a certificate as such, what you have is a record of the entry onto the MOT database. Garage stamps went out with the old hand-written test certificates. Sure, you could forge them but that’ll do you no good as it’s all online now. It’ll be no good to produce to the Police or for taxing a vehicle. You should have been supplied with an emission test result though as technically, its part of the test requirements. I know many centres don’t, including one that I test at, because it’s simply a waste of ink and paper and the average customer hasn’t got a clue what the figures actually mean anyway. The test station has to keep a copy for three months so you could go back and ask for one. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Ha Ha. bloody databases everywhere.

So out of touch ,like went to look this morning to see if all that was meant to be done on service was done but give up when I couldn't even locate the oil filter looked on here to find that its not actually a filter like we used to have but an insert ,so is there a way of checking if service has been done or are we at the mercy of *** " yep, all done" ***
