The A14 is a 2 lane dual carriageway, the only problem with it is that it gets clogged up with lorries and caravans!

My worry is M6 at Birmingham

the M6 Toll bypasses all the usual traffic problems through Spaghetti Junction etc, however the M6 just north of Stoke has massive road works in place.
If it wasn't for the tin tent behind you I would say just go straight over the peak district as its a stunning drive but some steep hills make it awkward towing a caravan.

Personally I would go M6 (S), then A50 though Stoke, Uttoxeter, Derby, and pick up the M1 South next to East Midlands airport, then A14, and A1 to St Neots.
That puts you on motorway and dual carriageway all the way, with extended road works on the M6 and M1/A14 interchange which is about as good as your going to get.
