Hi there guys,
my freelander is showing dirty oily deposits around the hose and clip shown arrowed in the attached photo. ( this is not my engine as this one is clean)

Anybody know what can be causing it???

Join the club. Just clean out. Comes up from turbo. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

No offense, but it comes from the PCV system.
And yes, either you enforce/seal that connection or clean it periodically.

Thats good news, as long as a clean out does the trick thats fine, I,ll make a point to clean it (and also try to seal the hose from the crankcase oil separator to camshaft cover)

The oil escapes from the connection of the upper intake pipe (the one with the lateral "organ" pipes) with the pipe that goes down to the turbo.
Not at the connection of the hose from the crankcase oil separator to camshaft cover.

Or if you think of plugging the hose from the crankcase oil separator to camshaft cover, DON'T.

Sorry, not an English speaker, so maybe I didn't get very well what you meant.

I had a simular oil leak but it was at the connection of the small pipe and the big pipe (on an SD engine the small and big pipes are different). Initially the oil trickled down the back of the engine. Just couldn't work out where it was coming from. I decided to start at the top.

On taking the big pipe off the connector with the small pipe was oily. To confirm I put everything back and pushed a piece of cardboard between the big pipe and engine cover. Couple of days later it was so obvious where the leak was coming from.

The simple fix was to buy a secondhand big pipe with the small pipe connector attached


Over a month later and no leaks.

Thanks for the help, I will have look at the situation and keep all informed, it could be a typical situation calling for self amalgamating tape......

It would be interesting to know something about the "organ pipes" on the pre 2011 engines, it sounds like some sort of tuning or resonance issue that needed to be resolved. Anyone got any ideas? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It was an attempt to reduce the NVH (noise, vibrations, harshness), based on organ pipe theory.
But on a diesel engine, this is a futile endeavor, in my opinion, as the sound of air traveling trough the pipes is the least of the sound makers...

The clean air duct is manufactured to incorporate four-quarter wave tubes and a connection to the crankcase ventilation system.
The quarter wave tubes reduce the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) levels created by the air travelling through the duct.

Why it is oil in that conection ? From where ?
