Autobox vibration

Hello, I have 2011 SD4 auto 120,000 ish miles. Full service history, last year gearbox and transfer box oils changed, haldex and rear diff done 6 months before that. Recently had timing belt done. Started today with a vibration when in P,N,R not in D when at tickover held on brake or when driving but is there on braking/over run. Almost feels like old style axle windup but can't be if it's occurring at N and when stationary. Any ideas or should I start with gearbox oil check/change? Odd that it seems to drive OK in D or sports mode on manual change. Hopefully someone has an idea! I did do a search but nothing seems to match the symptoms.

Just to add, I have a iCarsoft and it's not reading any fault codes for the gearbox.

This is a wild guess but could it be something like an engine mounting issue? The fact that you had the cambelt changed implies that the top engine mount would have been disturbed. Add to this the fact that it only occurs when the engine isn't "pushing" against the torque convertor when in N or P. ie when it's in D with the brake on (so under load) then you don't get a vibration but when the engine is not under load then it's free to wobble about? Just a thought although my theory wouldn't explain why you still get it in R. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

This is what I am coming round to thinking. I checked the top mount and the rubber on the link arm is perished so the main mount must be worn too. I think you're right in the drive is tilting the engine slightly as you suggest. I'm going to replace the mount first and see what happens.

Well, problem solved. It was indeed engine mount related. After checking top mount with pry bar and that changing the vibration, I decided to check the other mounts. Underneath, guard plate off and the lower tie rod is very accessible. Lo and behold what do I find but the mechanics stubby screw driver jammed into the space in the middle of the rod therefore making a direct connection from engine to body. Levered it out and all is fine! Going to enjoy returning the mechanic's screwdriver.....

Brilliant, I hope your French is good enough to have a good rant and tell them where they can stick their screwdriver. Start with "vous pouvez mettre ce tournevis là où le soleil ne brille pas". 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Isn't Google translator handy.

But, from the picture I think the screwdriver is already in a place where the sun doesn't shine.

PS - Thank you djburns for posting the outcome of your problem, very interesting. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
