UK to ban most hybrid cars, including Prius, from 2040

Just out in the Financial Times

Government will issue document banning vehicles that rely on traditional engines

Hybrid cars that rely on traditional engines, such as the Toyota Prius, would be banned by 2040 under plans being drawn up by the UK government that would outlaw up to 98 per cent of the vehicles currently on the road.

Vehicles such as the Prius — the best-selling hybrid car in Britain — will no longer be classified as “environmentally friendly” enough to be sold, according to three people briefed on the government’s plans to tackle emissions and air quality.

The exact wording is still under consultation between several government departments, with the transport, environment and business departments all feeding into the final document.

The plans are backed by Michael Gove, environment secretary, and Greg Clark, business secretary. But Chris Grayling, transport secretary, who has Toyota’s UK headquarters in his constituency, has resisted the plans.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport said: “It is categorically untrue that government is planning to ban the sale of hybrid cars in the UK by 2040.”

Last July, the government outlined plans to ban the sale of “conventional” cars from 2040.

The vague wording caused considerable confusion among carmakers, because it was unclear whether cars that use both batteries and traditional engines would be permitted.

The new document aims to clarify the government’s position, and outline how it intends to grow public demand for electric vehicles in the interim years. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I do wonder about the sense of some of these politically motivated plans and announcements.

These MPs seem to flit from one job/ expertise to another after very short times in office and act as if they have a lifetime of experience in the subject.

Michael Gove, for example, seems to continually come up with one policy after another.

The trouble is, just like he is changing all the preceding policies, we can be sure that however follows him will have a different view of everything.

Reminds me of work, where I gradually began to realise that many people changed things for publicity (and hopefully get promotion), then moving on while leaving those left to put things right.

Yes, we need a long term transport policy, but in the meantime we need someone to sort out the existing road system and public transport. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Well anything Gove is involved in is a disaster. He put Education back 60 years so perhaps he is trying to do the same for transport Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

I’m pretty sure by 2040 a Prius will be capable of 50 miles on electric. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

After the initial HEADLINE GRABBING announcement by Michael Gove.

Some of the people in the Ministry of Transport are posting corrections and clarifications.

I think now it should read -- From 2040 the SALE of NON PLUGIN Hybrids and Straight Petrol and Diesel cars will be banned.

Plug in Hybrids will need an Electric Range of at least 50 miles.

PS It may change again tomorrow. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Talking to my brother over the weekend and he has just traded in his 2.5 yr old Honda Civic diesel for a new Honda Civic 1 litre 3 cylinder petrol turbo which apparently performs very well . He normally buys a new one every three years. Apparently his local Honda dealer called him with a story that they want to move people onto petrol models and have great offers (probably means they had a buyer already for his car and wanted to shift it quickly). They did make him a very good deal and the salesman said that the dealership hadn't sold a new diesel for several months. Add to that the news this morning that Nissan is to stop making diesel engines shortly and I wonder where JLR is going? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

JLR are still putting faith in diesel.

A few years ago just as diesel was becoming popular Honda said they would never build a diesel but crumpled as diesel sales were booming.

I don’t think diesel was really a popular choice amongst Honda buyers. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
