Got a good cold start tip from my local LR Experience franchise owner yesterday:

1. Put in the key fob and without pressing clutch or brake, press the start button so that the self checks are completed (same as you would to light up the dash to check fuel level, etc., without starting the engine).

2. Press clutch/brake and push starter button. The system will have measured the temperature during step 1 to determine the fastest start, using glow plugs if necessary.

The temperature in the Ardennes (south of Belgium) this morning 10 a.m. was - 16° C. During the night probably - 18° C.
After pushing the starter button it took 8 sec. before the starting motor slowly came into action and a few seconds later gasping and spluttering the engine began to work.
It was the sound of a 50 years old truck... Shocked but it worked ! We - my wife and I - warmed up from the bottom (literally) by the heated seats. Amazing how fast those become hot. In this arctic climat a heavenly pampering.

Don't let me get started on that !

The green fundamentalists maintain silence this days - about global warming that is. Their focus now is SMOG, so the speedlimit on motorways in Belgium has been reduced to 90 Km/h (56 Mph).
This will certainly help a lot ! About environmental consequences of the increasing number and length of trafic jams - they maintain silence as well. Banging Head

It guess it must be the unusual cold that slows down your brain functions, Andy.

Many thanks Chris, over the last week the car has been starting but it has been taking a little longer than usual as if it was struggling, tried your tip today and started straight away

This is my way in both cold and hot weather.
I take my time to this step 1, and waiting for the computer to be silent.
Only after brief stop, I jump over step1 when I start again. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq . Watch the instrument panel (not the windscreen) in minus 5 starting and you will see it Thumbs Up

I noticed this morning a glowplug light came on --- the temperature was 0 (Zero) degrees C. It is the highest (the warmest) temperature I have seen the sparkle light.

Yes, AndyC, I've begun to watch the instrument panel when pressing the START / STOP button. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq .
