Freelander 2 auto display on dashboard

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong place, this is my first post.

i recently bought a 2009 Freelander 2 automatic and I’m quite impressed with it but when I’m driving along there is no indication of the gear I’m in isn’t shown on the dashboard display.Theres only a small Very Happy: showing on the display. The numbers are showing when I put the car in sport mode, does anyone know why this is? Thanks in advance,Frankie

Know mine says. D. R. N. or P. If that's any help? no number showing what D gear I'm in. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Thanks for your speedy reply, I’ve seen some videos that show the dis play as D1,D2 and so on. To be honest I’ve never looked at the display when in reverse but I’ll pop out later to check,Regards, Frankie

Hi there
From your description it's sounds like it's all working correctly..

There are three modes
1. Auto,. Select D. The actual gear not shown in display. There is a "D" in the display.
2. Sport mode which basically keeps car in lower gear before changing up,. Selected by moving selector to left when in drive.
3. Command shift. Gear is selected by moving lever forward or back when sport mode is selected. Selected gear is shown in display.

It's all in the manual which, if you haven't come across it yet might be hidden in its clip at the back of the glove box. Sorry if that sounds condescending but the black leather wallet is easily overlooked unless specifically looking at it.

Good luck with the car, the auto is a pleasure to drive as you will no doubt discover.

Cheers, I’ll have a look for it. Is there a manual online I can download?

I too think landrover missed a trick here. All vw group dsg box cars have the gear number in their display and although it’s easy to know what gear you are in most of the time I still think it’s a good idea. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

You can find the manual in topix: https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/vehicle/lookupForm. You will have to register but it's free. They can also be found here: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10621.html

It's really not that difficult to do, IF you have access to diagnostic equipment that can flash ECUs.

There might be a member near to you who would do it for a nominal fee.
