Loud drive noise

My 09 Freelander 2 auto at 180k miles has developed a much louder noise when driving. Compensated for by having the radio on louder!

I can only describe the noise as sounding like 'increased road noise'. But I've had the garage check and the wheel bearings are fine, they suggested tyres, but I've had four new tyres put on. No change in noise.

The noise doesn't seem to be not overly variable with speed. Its difficult to figure out exactly where it is coming from whilst driving. What do I need to try to listen out for / figure to come up with some form of diagnosis. '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

Have you had the front & rear diff checked also, ideally with chassis ears as this tool can detect if any of these items are generating noise when being driven

No I haven't. The garage was a indy local one that specialises in basics such as suspensions, steering etc.. but not on transmission issues. '09 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto

If you could find a garage that has this device it may be worth giving it a try, at least it will either show up where the issue is or confirm these items are fine. May put your mind at rest a little

New tyres need to settle in for a few hundred miles and then they tend to be quieter.

Ensure at the bottom of the steering column the grommet is still fitted correctly, especially pertinent if any work has been done in that area.

Did you renew all the transmission oils at or before 150,000 miles ? Mine is manual but I would flush an Autobox once heading North of 100,000 miles.

At the end of the day if its the diff or front transfer box etc on its way out with those higher miles you wont now stop the inevitable so it may be a simple case of let it develop. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
