not too sure, however in this document I think Page 536 shows some useful diagrams that may help you decide if this is possible

it looks like the steering gear (rack) is attached to the subframe with two bolts - accessible from underneath, the two track rod ends and then to the steering column input shaft as below.

edit : further reading in this document and I found page 560 - which states the subframe is removed as part of the processto remove the rack

How did you get on? I had a very minor bump in my FL2, hitting a small wooden post in a car park as I pulled off, and it appears that I have damaged the steering rack. I’m anxious to avoid the massive cost of a strip down just to inspect it. Potted LR history since 1990:

A garage should be able to inspect the steering for damage by simply putting your car up on a ramp and at most removing the engine undertray which is only six bolts. A visual inspection can then determine if the rack has been damaged or not. The centre part of the rack is secured to the subframe which helps protect it from any damage but the steering arms that come out to either wheel are a bit more exposed and could suffer damage in extreme cases.
You could do a quick check for damage yourself by putting the steering on a full lock and looking for damage at the parts of the rack that you can see. If you can jack it up safely and take the front wheels off then even better access can be obtained. What issues are you having with the steering that leads you to think it has been damaged? Noisy/misaligned steering wheel/pulling?

Following the bump, the steering wheel is slightly to the right (between 12 and 1) to go straight ahead. Traction control is not available. I checked it out before deciding it was OK to drive to my local independent LR specialist and they did the diagnosis. However they said that it was a big job (sub-frame etc) but after they spoke to the main dealer, the main dealer said that they might be able to do the repair without so much work. So right now the main dealer is going to inspect it and report back. I'm just trying to find out what other people have done. Potted LR history since 1990:
