Since the days of having my Impreza remapped, I’ve endeavoured to run on Shell V-power. Used it in my Forester and been doing the same since buying the Landy. It’s clearly more expensive but supposedly a better fuel. Anyone any thoughts? Mines a 63plate HSE auto

To be honest I've never felt any difference when using premium fuels to supermarket fuels apart from the price. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

I've been driving 50 years now (not continuously...) and must have covered well over half a million miles. I've owned a wonderful variety of vehicles, currently proudly owning a 2011 FL2 and a beautiful 2007 Jaguar XK. I have always used the cheapest fuel available, and living where I do, premium fuels are simply not available. I am not aware of ever suffering any kind of problem with a car due to the fuel that I was using.

However, in a recent 1,700 mile trip to the south west of England and back (in the Jaguar) I decided to treat it to premium fuel. Shell V-power is not widely available in the Highlands, but I was able to get BP Ultimate, which I presume is a close equivalent. During the trip, the Jaguar returned the same fuel consumption averages as when run on 'ordinary' fuel. I was not aware of any difference in performance, or in the way the engine ran.

The extra cost for using premium fuel for the 1700 mile trip was around £30.

Got a bottle of Millers diesel power ecomax in the boot at the minute, thought Id try it with premium fuel from BP rather than Tesco diesel that I normally use. Last tank was about 1 mpg higher than usual but its hardly scientific testing conditions. I'll keep using BP while I have the Millers and then see if there is a difference when I go back to Tesco. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

always use Shell V Power for both my cars, not just more mpg but better for your engine due to additives that keep your fuel system clean, etc

no need to buy extra additives, don't mind the extra cost, and I always use the best oil as well.

The thing is they can pay any old scientist who's willing to pocket the cash that it works a treat,testing results can be bent to suit whoever.

I always use the cheapest supermarket fuel available. I have never had any known problems from dirty fuel or had any engines that suffered from clogging up.
From what I can read for DIESEL engines these special fuels just have extra cleaning agents in them.

With petrol, high efficiency is helped by high compression ratios, and certain cars do adjust their timing (and perhaps boost pressure) according to the octane number of the fuel.
Otherwise again I fail to see the use of specialised fuel, unless of course you are running that F1 car. I bet it costs considerably more than £1 a litre. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

at the end of the day the type of fuel you use is personal choice, just like type of oil, etc

I always use the best oil, but others use the cheapest non branded oil and never have any problems.
