Help needed! Swirl flaps removed = Problems.

Ahoy there!

I had my mechanic remove the swirl flaps from the intake when they installed a reconditioned auto gearbox.
Actuator rod and vacuum hose left in place.
They also put in new glow plugs and glow plug relay.

Driving home i got error message "reduced engine performance"

Read the error codes:
P2562-63 (AB) Turbocharger boost control position sensor A circuit - Algorithm based failure - circuit component protection time out.

P0380-00 (BB) Glow plug/heater circuit A

The mechanic contacted the authorized dealer who claimed they never ever heard of anyone removing swirl flaps, and that the flaps are controlled by the turbo waste gate vacuum.

Where does the vacuum tube get its vacuum from?

I see a big bill coming my way... Big Cry

THANKS for any and all help!
Magnus

NO No No!!

Today (10-04-1Cool he told me that they just replaced the vacuum hose after the flaps were removed......

Mechanic has now blanked off vacuum hose at both ends, car still throwing "reduced engine performance" after a few minutes of driving. Censored Big Cry

Hello Magnus,

there is no waste gate on your car.
The turbocharger is a variable vane type with an electric actuator.
As I managed to drive around with the vacuum hose broken, that won't throw a code.
The vacuum comes from a pump somewhere near the airbox

Check the electrical connectors to the plugs/relay and on the turbocharger.
Might just be a loose connector.

Thanks Rusty!!!

The mech has now ordered a ”turbo pressure sensor” from LR to se if that fixes the problems...?

Since mine is acting funny as well (getting P0299 and others with reduced power on and off),
here are some things I worked out.
There was a problem with the wiring to the charge pressure regulator, wich should have been fixed during service.

The charge pressure regulator (made by Hella) apparently has some issues with broken soldering points.
You can find some information on Ford and Renault forums.

Afaik the fault is mostly on the thin wire bridges and not always easy to identify.
Also it's aluminium to make it more fun.

I hope to have time to take mine out this weekend and test it.

Running a leak test on the intake system is also an easy way to rule the hoses and intercooler out.

New turbo sensor fitted, same problem though..... Big Cry
Our mechanic has reached the end of the road.

Could it still be related to the swirl flaps i wonder???

Hmmmm!!

Found this here on the forum...

"Fault code P0299 Turbo/Supercharger Under Boost
My final fix was "fault traced to perished O rings and flap arm in inlet manifold damaged - replace with new" LR006680 Manifold - Air Intake LR005364 Gasket - Intake Manifold Total price (2012) 259.54 at main dealer. So probably didn't need the new turbo and EGR cooler!"

Did the O rings get replaced when the work to the manifold was done? LR do state "Install the new seals"

The O-ring seals where not replaced.
Driving the car today i get ”reduced engine performance” but no fault codes are generated!??!

It is alternating between normal power and reduced when driving...
What i do notice however is a wastegate like swoosh when i step off the accelerator. Hmmm.
Could it be the variable vane controll unit connectir as mentioned earlier.

Mechanic now wants to send the variable vane unit to a place that refurbishem them.. £££

Hi mace,

I had the unit out and there was no fault with it. So no pictures.

Did your mechanic pressure check the intake system?
Might work if you use brake cleaner as on a n/a engine.

I would suspect an air leak where he took the inlet manifold off.
Easiest way to check is use a pressure smoke tester to introduce smoke into the intake & see where the leak is.

It'll most likely be the intake o rings (8 of) or the inter cooler hose where it fits onto the intake.

Or did he leave off the lever arm for the swirl flaps, as this causes a leak.?
The vac hose which goes to the swirl diaphragm should be blanked off with a bolt or similar.

Actually having no swirl flaps will not cause an issue.
The likelyhood of the turbo playing up directly after is very unlikely.

regards
Steve

The garage got the refurbished variable vane turbo actuator back.
The mechanic was told to make sure the pivot arm on the turbo unit moves freely befor refitting the actuator.
It is not!! He just told me the arm is a bit stiff, he will investigate further.

Anyone with furter knowledge about the pivot arm??

Yes I have previously mentioned that it needs lubricating and moving in and out when doing a service as they seize up. Easy enough to do once the bottom skid plate is off and a doddle on a garage ramp.
