Hi everyone, I've just come to my car and it has a flat tyre! GREAT! my wheels are 215/75R16 however the spare wheel is 235/65R17 ??? Can anyone help and advise me if this is ok to put on and use till the other is fixed.

Absolutely NOT !!!

The spare has more tread (235mm) than the other tyre (215) on the same axle.

Whilst the rolling circumference may be the same, the tread on the road will change your suspension and cornering.

DON'T DO IT.

Oh and when your get your road wheel repaired, get yourself a true 16" spare. You could off set the cost by selling the 17" wheel.

Grrr I'm worried. I only need to get me about 6 miles on the road could this cause any damage to the drive shaft etc? I have put it on as didn't want it stood on the flat. its now derby day and no garages open! 2007 Freelander 2

well if it was MY only option, I would do it, if you read too much on this forum you will end up with paranoia

God I don't know how we survived the 1970s sometimes, most people had gear sticks and things hanging thru the car floor.

6 miles at a steady pace 30/40 not too many corners. Its supposed to be a car that can go off road with perhaps one (or two) wheels in the air at times for gawds sake

As a get you home, no issue (although I would be inclined to put it on the back...)

It’s only a 1% diameter difference (or at least when both tyres are new) so no different to putting on a new spare tyre to get you home if your running wheels have worn tyres

The section difference, well, the standard steel spare supplied by LR was 225/65/17 at one stage so different anyway. 2000 Xei 1.8 gone

I gave my opinion, looks like the other posters gave you advice.

When in my youth I was involved in a RTA only 200yds from my parents home.

A work colleague was stopped by the police at 6.00 AM for speeding only 1 mile from the hotel he stopped at over night.

You roll the dice and take the chance. Or you use common sense.

I don't know that using a wider tyre is necessarily any less dangerous than using a narrow space saver, but the same restrictions should apply i.e, DON'T GO OVER 50.

I do however take the point that more braking at one corner could be more detrimental than less braking compared to three corners in upsetting the car....if that makes sense. And 235 will put a reasonable amount more rubber down than a 215.

I wouldn't but it's up to you If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

We’re all strangers with opinions on the net, in the end it’s up to the OP....

As I pointed out, the spare supplied by LR at one stage for the fl was different size and section (and on a steel rim to be used with alloy nuts)...And if you call the AA they’ll follow you home having put one of their bicycle wheel rescue wheels on...

Yeah i did call Greenflag but not much they could do for advice..
whilst on the subject I'm thinking of changing the wheels and thinking about going to the 17" ones what would you guys recommend for the best size?

Circumference 2289 vs 2314 mm only 1% difference, you would get more stress getting out of a multi level shopping centre car park than a few kilometres down the road.

It only takes 15 minutes to put a plug in the tyre & pump it up again. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
