Power Steering Problem

Car has been standing in the garage for about a week, all was fine when I put it away.
Come to take it out yesterday, got to the end of the drive and started to turn right, started to bang and clatter and steering sounded like a bucket of rusty bolts. So put it straight back and left it in case I did any damage.
Looked it up on here and would you believe it, its another known issue that LR are keeping to themselves.
If its metal filings in the power steering bottle filter would there be any damage on such a short bit of use.
My thoughts are, replace the power steering bottle and thoroughly flush the system with new fluid.
I assume the noise is because the filter is blocked and the fluid can't be pumped round.
If it hasn't been driven with it blocked I should be able to save the steering rack. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Nothing to lose by cleaning/changing the reservoir and changing the fluid. If it is the original fluid that has went a bit gunky and choked the filter then you should be fine. If it is swarf in the rack then its already throughout the system so a clean/change of fluid can`t do any harm. Worse case you will have wasted the new fluid if it needs a new rack /pump. Good luck!

Went to make a start this morning and decided to check to see if the noise could be anything else.
Well what do you know, driver side coil spring snapped near the top.
Two new springs now on order, going to start strip down now.
Still going to change the power steering reservoir and do flush though.
Two new springs cheaper than steering rack. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Wow!!!!!!!

That is a shocking outcome.

But it does make perfect sense that the problem could be collateral.
