Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey
Should it stay or should it go?

I would appreciate some advice. I’ve got a late (facelift) 2010 FL2 TD4 GS with manual gearbox. I’ve had it for three years. Bought it with 40k miles. It now has just under 90k. It’s been serviced every 10k miles from new and in the time i’ve had it it’s only need a clutch position sensor, exhaust temp sensor and a new battery. It will be due another service soon along with 4 new tyres and a couple of other cosmetic bits. I reckon it’ll be around £700 all in.

I’m deciding wheher or not to sell it and buy a late (2014) FL2 with low miles or just keep mine, but my concern is that the bigger bills might be about to start once it’s over 100k. At the same time, i know the current landy well and if i buy another FL2 it might be buying someone else’s problems. It will also cost me around £10k to buy the newer FL2.

Any advice or experience of running the FL2 into higher mileages? Are the benefits of the later models worth the upgrade? I’m not willing to spend the extra for a disco sport so that is not an option.

I'd love a later model just for the tech thats in them. But on my 59 plate, I've had the rear diff, clutch, throttle body and various little upgrades that make it mine. And its got about 105k on it. As much as I'd love the techy stuff, I dont think I'll be getting rid of it soon!

Mines a 2007 i6, done 107000 miles and unless something horrendous happened to it there's no way I will get rid of it. Had a 1998 V8 Discovery for nine years, only got rid of it when the engine started to play up. Common sense isn't very common.

Most of the lower mileage high spect 14 plate cars are on at silly money. With more Ewoks and DS around plus diesel no longer being flavour of the month the market is set for a realignment. I would currently hang on in there sticking with your regular service reigieme. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I agree that, at this moment in time, there is little point in swapping. You are due a big servicing bill at 120K, but even with that looming, the depreciation on newer models will be faster than yours + costs.

In a couple of years, when the first batch of DS come out of lease agreements and hit the market, the price of the FL2 will go the way of the Hippo ((FL1) any year, any spec will be cheap as chips.

Thanks for the replies. I think you've confirmed my thoughts that it's best to stick with what i've got at least for the next couple of years. Even if a big repair bill comes along it's likely that it'll only work out at a years worth of depreciation on a newer model.

If you get a 14 plate you will (hopefully) get the bigger rear diff bearing and a lot of the ewok electronics and other bits and pieces. Having moved from a 80k miles 2011 GS manual to a 25k miles 2014 XS SD4 auto it might be me but the car feels (even) nicer to drive. Suspension and steering feels slightly different and it's almost as if they sorted out the FL2 niggles in the later cars. It cost me about £11k last year to do the swap and I got a 2 yr warranty. I am happy with that, I will probably keep the car for another two years (buying an extended warranty for year 3) and then look around but not sure that it will be a DS. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

You could have a look at Japanese imports. Might get a very low mileage and high spec for a good price. Common sense isn't very common.

Land Rover never modified the diff bearing through out the Freelander 2 production run. I don't know where you had the info from that 2014 were fitted with bigger diff bearings ?

I think the other aspect of changing is specification. If you are going from shopping spec to fully loaded then changing is more of a viable consideration. If you go new enough to get a manufacturers warranty there is also a lot to be said for that as well as you have pretty much ring fenced costs.

Because Terry was fully loaded I would have to go HSE Spec just to get the toys that I already enjoy. Granted the newer version would be quieter, smoother etc but £15K is a lot to pay just for quieter and smoother. In 3 years that vehicle will loose £10K in depreciation (if not more) and Terry might loose 2.

Where this all goes the way of the pear is if you have a knock. It matters not how much you have paid out to maintain an older car, if it gets hit it will be written off and you will get very little.

As a bit of a laugh I got a valuation for Terry off the Land Rover Approved web site. At the suggested £4K anything more than a parking door ding is likely to write him off. Big Cry

I read it somewhere (probably on this forum) that from 2013 LR aligned the production line of the FL2 and ewok to use a number of common components and electrics and that the later diffs had the modified bearing. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yes, but if the change price is only £10k, he's not paying the silly money (Like we did - main dealer low mileage 14 plate - ouch)

The FL2 is a bit unusual - not much around like it now, so if you get a 14, you are getting hold of the newest car of it's kind you can.

Normally I'd recommend keeping forever and then replacing. It's rarely cost effective to change a car for fear of service costs until a car gets very old indeed.

I have a 2013 HSE LUX
I too have just been told by My Local Land rover specialist, that mine has the modified diff so shouldn't worry about the bearing failure fault??
I took this to be true as they have a fantastic reputation..

Can anyone else confirm this upgrade??
