Camera as a rear view mirror

On a Caravan forum a guy has posted that he has wired up a camera on the back of the caravan linked to a screen on his dashboard and uses as a rear view mirror.
Is this legal? Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Lorries have done it for years and it is also a feature of some Le Mans cars.

If it is used to supplement mirrors I can't see how it would be anything other than a good thing...not that that alone would mean it was legal.

When towing your rear view mirror can become obsolete, as you can't see what is behind you (other than the unit being towed) Many use there door mounted mirrors to compensate.

I have a DashCam that also serves as a Rear View Mirror.

I am NOT saying its legal, but it is better than NO 'view' at all.

Thumbs Up

Just a side note , some says it’s legal because his disc sports camera is live when going forward. Surely the DS. Camera is the same as the freelanders , only works in reverse. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I understand what you say.

My DashCam is live at all times , being a dual camera set up. I don't need to select reverse.

...... and it records BOTH cameras into separate digital files, for playback.

What I see on the display screen is selectable.

.

Yeah your camera is live , but it’s to record, not to be used as a mirror. This guy is towing a Caravan at 60mph with a live view of what’s happening behind him . To me that’s pretty distracting. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

My DS camera worked whilst going forward though my Velar doesn’t. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Cameras are perfectly legal as far as the MOT testing standards are concerned. For cars registered after 1978 you have to have one mirror or 'indirect vision device' on the offside of the car and one further mirror or 'indirect vision device' on either the rear or nearside.

My Disco has the option to run the camera when going forward, trust me, it’s not that interesting. Vehicles at work have rear view cameras ignition live, only way you can see what’s directly behind you, why anyone would stare at it and become distracted is beyond me, same as staring at a rear view mirror, just glance at it now and then. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Are rear view monitors inverted, as you would see things in a mirror? So things on the right of the vehicle are on the right of the screen etc?

Reversing cameras are inverted, as far as I remember, but a simple rear facing camera may not have that viewpoint.

In the video electronics world its call Mirror Flip. Mine acts as a true mirror would. Unlike your MobilePhone 'Selfie' mode.
