Hi guys, coming from D3 forum looking to buy a used LR2 2008

I have been looking through forum, is there a list to look at when purchasing a used one. Looking at 2008-2009 models. I know the D3/LR3 inside out, but don't really know the FL2/LR2 at all,l for the fact that it also has failing diffs.
What should I look for when test driving one (US market one)?

I was looking for a sort of list of what to look after for the V6 US version. Sun roof leaks, cracked dashboard, electric issues, engine to trans issues? etc.
We own 2 LR3/D3's and they have been very reliable. So this F2/LR2 is not for us, but for my mother who wants one.

First things first: Sorry to disappoint you, but there is no V6 version. The i6 is a straight 6 as used in certain Volvos!

Body wise, they are identical to "our" TD4 versions, just brakes & suspensions (I believe) are upgraded. The FL2 body and running gear is relatively bulletproof compared to LR3/D3 & D4.

Sorry thats what I meant 6i not V6. I have been looking at a few, a lot of them seem to have cracked dashes, driver side window motor not working and map sensor issues. My 2005 V8 D3 has been bullet proof actually.

I suspect the cracked dash has more to do with the fact that the UK is not blessed with the same amount of sunshine as some US states . As far as the rest of the car goes it’s a Ford , built in Liverpool . So many parts will be generic to Ford world platforms including Volvo and Mazda . The Haldex unit is also common to a lot of those vehicles and VAG cars , so shouldn’t cause you any issues . That leaves the diff which is easily rebuildable . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Take a look at Tubolove's posts. He is over your side of the pond and has been getting pretty deep in to the i6.

Take a look at this post it outlines the 18 areas that should be looked at on an older LR2 with the 3.2

If you find a LR2 ask how many of the 18 items have been done, on a 2008 it should be quite a few.

If the previous owner has been avoiding the maintenance items then you should take that into consideration.

For My 2008 I've done most of the items on the list.

If you do the work yourself the cost isn't very high.



If you do the maintenance then the LR2 is very reliable, it is the most reliable car that I've owned.

If you avoid the maintenance then you should pick a different vehicle.



The best example of this is power steering reservoir, it has a screen filter in the bottom. Over time the screen gets clogged and the fluid degrades.

Option a: Change the reservoir and fluid as preventative maintenance cost $50 plus labor

Option b: Wait for the power steering system to malfunction, cost will be thousands of dollars depending on what fails

PS If I were to buy another LR2 I would buy a 2009 or 2010, the lack of vertical adjust on the passenger seat on my SE is a little annoying. Also the later Leather seats are nicer (at least the stitching is nicer) my wife noticed this on a loaner LR2 and I agree.

So I found a Black 08 with 140K miles. Looks good. Will test drive it in a few days. What should I look for at that milage? And is that Ok or is that to high of millage?

well this list is pretty comprehensive from earlier in the thread
1. Starter --> faulty, was replaced after around 199,000 kms. - replaced mine earlier this year
2. Engine Mount --> faulty indicated by noisy on passenger side - not replaced on my LR2
3. Blower Resistor --> faulty, indicated by uncontrolled blower - not replaced on my LR2
4. AC Compressor --> faulty, indicated by hot AC Smile - not replaced on my LR2
5. Rear Pinion Bearing on Differential --> this causing noisy on rear side if not replaced - replaced the gear oil and added a magnetic drain plug
6. Spark Plug --> replaced at 125,000 kms as preventive maintenance - replaced mine twice (every 50,000 miles)
7. serpentine belt --> replaced at 190,000 kms as preventive maintenance (it should be at 167,000 kms actually) - Volvo reccomends 150,000 miles, my belt has no crack so I haven't done this yet
8. brake pad --> consumable - replaced front twice and rear once
9. Power steering fluid and reservoir replaced due to noisy heavy steering
10. Battery - replaced twice
11. Fuses - replaced all of my fuses in the engine bay and by the front passengers feet due to corrosion (to prevent electrical gremlins)
12. Relays - replaced several to prevent electrical gremlins
13. Door seal - replace due to wear drivers door only
14. Shift boot and emergency brake gator replaced
15. ATF fluid flushed
16. Brake fluid flushed
17. Front Brake calipers refurbished
18. Coolant replaced


but at 140,000 miles and at that age then the timing belt, tensioners and water pump should have been done (at least once)
condition of oil, condition/colour of coolant, condition of brakes and tyres, overall general condition of paintwork and interior, does it drive ok without any clunks, bangs, knocks, grindings, squeals etc etc (all the usual stuff when buying any car really)

does the TR and the Hill descent work ok ? (they should show the same messages etc as your D3)
