What about reversing sensors - when they first came out I thought they would never catch on.

agree ,but surely these are "aid,s" they are not in total control of the car.and yes I have them factory fitted front and rear,i used to own a car with an 8"rev camera but I still mainly relied on the mirrors, also have the big metal reversing aid sticking out of the back.a mate had a new corsa run into the back of his freelander at around slow walking pace, the mess was incredible the towbar took the clonk, all it did was knock the plastic ball cover off.he had no damage, the corsa was recovered on a truck

ref the incident in America, how are they going to sort that one out?,the lawyers will have a field day.who will they hold accountable, the car manufacturer, whoever that is,or the company who made the part that failed, the people who passed it as safe to be driven on the highway, the possibilitys are endless.what ever they do they cant blame the "driver"as the car did not have one.

Some very sober observations Andy,it's a pity the manufacturers seem to choose to ignore the facts ,and carry on regardless and build things with known possibility of serious errors. gone

Reference the US incident, I am surprised that so many say she came out of nowhere, the woman with the cycle crossed at least two lanes without a problem and seemed to almost make the last lane before being hit by the cars near side ( they are in the States and they do drive on the other side to us) The so called safety driver was looking down not at the road, the video also seemed to be of low quality for night vision but that may be the playback for that camera and possibly not one of the sensors, I thought the avoidance system used a combination of infra-red, sonar/doppler radar video, one of them should have pi cked either her or the cycle and activated the avoidance system. Forget the safety driver, she seemed bored and disinterested and on an fairly clear road at night perhaps was getting ready for bed, if not physically but in the mind. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

From the evidence here I would say that the car should have picked up the woman crossing in front of the car.

That crash and the poor woman`s death creates quite a dilemma I think. If the car was being driven by a human driver and had been an "ordinary" car would there still have been an accident? Personally and admittedly based on a very narrow line of vision given by the video I think that she would still have been hit even if the driver had been driving the car and not the computer. Sad outcome whatever your views are. |

I suspect the human vision would have been greater than the camera due to the camera being stopped down so as not to cause white out as it enters the street lights, thus the street lights are shown as individual pools of light rather than graduating intensities as we normally see on streets, witnesses have said it is a well lit street, the video contradicts that but does not show the true lighting. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

There are many articles on the sensors used by these self driving vehicles.

Watch BBC 'Click' for a view on a company called WayMo, who work with JLR, using an iPace Jag. |
