Anyone got a 3d printer?

I have one of these black thingies missing, im not buying a whole £85 air vent and dismantling the dash because of it.

I know im not the only one... If i had a printer I'd be selling them for a few bob on fleabay. The pair sells for £27 on there, but its usually just the black clip thats gone.

I've had 3D printers for several years.

Often the secret of a successful printed piece is to design it to be printed.

It may well be possible to redesign that piece so that it both does the job intended and prints well but, without one to model I can't say.

The other issue is if it would stand up with a vent turned on hot. I would print in ABS, which is more resistant to heat than the normal PLA, but it may still be an issue.

In short, it is quite a lot of work and would require selling more than a handful at "a few bob" to make it worth the trouble.

As said above!

I do not have a 3D printer, but do 3D. People don't realize how much work goes into drawing up complex 3D objects that work in the 3D world in a fly-through etc, let alone the physical world. It is one thing to draw a simply geometric shape & another to draw a mathematically correct object which is a complex shape, & another step so it will be a successful printed product. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Lads... It moves air vents. Its not an engine part for a 747 Laughing

ABS - yes. PLA might go all soft and wear out after a while.
Other than that, it should be fairly straight forward.

A 3d printer, even a cheap one, will cost twice the price of an airvent, otherwise I'd buy one and print a bunch of these off to put on ebay, not to make me a squillionaire, but because theres a few folks here would appreciate them.

A prong tool to fit them could be printed out too, I bent some old coat hanger up to do mine.

I have been doing 3D since mid 1990, at $50 personally I would rather buy the part!

Lightwater - thats a cracking scene! I thought it was real for a minute. My brother does 3d stuff, ill stick to code thanks Wink

There is another reason too, I want a set of these for my white FL2.
But I can only find them for Evoque's or Defenders.

I can find the black badges online though, just not ones with the plinth.

Very sweet renders that man.

My job these days is pretty much as a freelance technical draughtsman. While working in 3D all day, every day, most ends up as fabrication drawings rather than renders....I don't think I've used 3DS Max 2018 yet this year and 2019 is about to come out. Sad

I do render out some products, mainly to demonstrate to Clients that what they think they have drawn doesn't actually look right, but most renders these days are just for my own entertainment.

There has been some commercial stuff in there as well but, as you say, people seldom appreciate the time involved and I end up subsidising it myself just because I enjoy doing it.

Nah, black and silver badge with red plinth. Not a black and silver badge covered in red marker pen 😉

This design seems quite common.

There is a site: www.venttabs.com that sells a better-designed tab to replace your broken ones with, thing is, they dont do Land Rovers! But if enough of us click on the "coming soon" button and fill the form in, then they will do them.

Smash that button! Smile
