so that we won't drive, they will have total control, no more speeding, accidents etc, don't know how the government will cope without robbing us for road tax as there would be no point in having your own car, just taxi's. Common sense isn't very common.

Two issues come to mind
1 The early autonomous cars are going to be VERY expensive. People who pay a premium for the first of something tend to be enthusiasts, enthusiasts tend to want to be involved in the process. I see a mismatch here. But better informed people than I are ploughing vast amounts of money into this.
2 When designing control systems, you have to take into account EVERY eventuality (I do this for a living), on a chemical plant the options are limited (large but limited) you can open valve 1, open valve 2, open both or neither, you know the consequences off all 4 actions, and can take appropriate action. Multiply this buy the hundreds of valves, heaters, pumps etc. in a plant and you get the idea of complexity. Human beings on the other hand are not predictable, the options are almost limitless, will they jump out in front of the vehicle, can the camera system see a pedestrian in white crossing the road against the glare of the setting sun?, is the road covered in 3" of water (is there a hidden obstruction below the water). I take my hat off to the teams that are writing the software - would I ever trust one to do the right thing in every eventuality NO, would I be happy that the car coming towards me is being driven autonomously - mmm probably better than the wife driving towards me Smile Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Because for 90% of people, driving is a chore and just a necessity to get from A to B. For the rest of us, they'll just be getting in the way.
Mind you, good way to get home from the pub. Mr. Green MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Simple; the government will cope by taxing the taxis.

All you need to know to be a politician:

If you can't tax it, ban it.

I think that once they become down a bit in price they will be very very popular. Doing the daily commute on the M74/M8 into Glasgow every day it already looks like loads and loads of people have self driving cars as although they are behind the wheel they are concentrating more on texting, applying makeup, reading the news paper, completing paperwork, eating breakfast, drinking coffee and other important stuff to have any time left for mundane stuff like actually paying any attention to the road. They must have every confidence in their "self driving" car as they carry all those tasks out whilst doing 60mph about 6 ft from the car in front. Whistle

For me I don't understand either...
For god sake get a Bus/Train/Taxi/Lift/Cycle/Walk i don't care. Rolling with laughter
For me I like the experience of driving and that's why I have owned some weird and wonderful cars over the years including a Citroen 2cv which I loved.

Let's keep driving real, I've just donned my flack jacket and helmet Laughing

I had 2 Dyanes in the 70's, the first went banana shaped after yumping across fields a bit too fast, the other, orange, had TWO buttons on the dash, wipers & goodness knows. Great fun to drive. In between I had a Sunbeam Tiger, bought & sold for £600, but it was very rusty. Really wanted an Ami 8 with the 4 cylinder GS engine, a rare beast then, quite dead now. FL2 Ex D2, D3, RRS, etc. now all gone.

Hmmm... my observation would be that folks had either minis or Citroens but there was a “Marmite” gap between the two tastes (I guess there were also the Hillman Imp guys too!). I was firmly in the mini camp - never saw anyone autotest a 2CV.

I do remember once being back-seat passenger in a Dyane and being overtaken on a hill by a JCB... 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Going a bit off topic here but yes, Im in the Mini camp.

Did anyone else notice the passenger in the front RIGHT HAND SEAT with a round thing loaded with buttons etc in front of him, keep his hands close to it,why would you do this?why was he not sitting in the back reading this months landrover international.?.
Then there is the blame game when some poor sod gets run over as just tragically happened in the states (thank god it was not a landrover, that would have got the anoraks against 4wds ranting)who gets done?the car?it cant be anyone in it surely as no one is driving.
When I see the adds where some smartarse in tv ads looking smug and letting the car reverse itself into a bay,all I see is some numbnuts who cant reverse Shocked gone
