Single PSA test for prostate cancer doesn't save lives

There's been debate for years over whether men should have PSA blood testing to screen for prostate cancer.

The problem with intensive PSA testing is that it's inaccurate and over-detects cancers that won't kill you, potentially resulting in unnecessary surgery or radiotherapy.

A new study has looked to see if having a single PSA test could make a difference, without the harm.

From my own personal experience.
Went to the docs in 2014,(not my own GP) telling him I had symptoms that I thought were prostate related. Was told to basically stop worrying because at 43 I was too young. However , he did send me for a blood test which came back positive.
Went back again and saw my own GP and was given the "finger test" and told by him that he would immediately send me to a prostate consultant.He also wasn't happy that the first GP dismissed me without doing the "finger test" first.
There was obviously a problem but I was happy with the fact I was going to be "fast tracked".
Waited a few weeks and heard nothing. Contacted my GP who got on to the hospital who apologised and said that "they had got the original referral, but due to an error, an appointment hadn't been made, sorry". (can't remember exactly but that was around June time). The earliest appointment they had was now in October You see, a couple of weeks after I originally went to the docs there was a massive campaign on TV and I was now at the back of a very long queue instead of at the front.
So, saw the consultant in October who was again dismissive and made me feel like a naughty school boy for effectively wasting his time. However, he decided "just to put your mind at ease" and do the finger examination. At which point he suddenly said "oh dear". No more than that, but immediately sent me for an endoscopy.That was for the November.
Anyway, the upshot is that I can either have my prostate removed , or be on tablets indefinitely until I decide have it removed........
So tablets it is .
I urge anyone who thinks there may be something wrong to go and sort it ASAP. Don't bury your head in the sand or be too "embarrassed". Doctors have been doing this all their careers, your backside will be one of hundreds they will have seen and it's what they're there for - do it. I just might save your life.

My brother has just had a prostrate problem aged 78. Initially found that he couldn't urinate so whisked off to A&E and they put a catheter in. That was 6 weeks ago. He has just had an op (basically stick an electric drill down yer todger and drill it out ). Seems OK now.
Some confusing messages coming out of NHS at the moment though about whether it's worth getting the PSA test . One medic once told me that most men die with prostrate cancer rather than of it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Any man older than 55 should be asking for a PSA blood test every year especially if they have a brother or father who has had prostate cancer or if African Caribean. Some doctors will do this without a rectal exan as well, others will refuse (change your GP in this case and ask again).

It's nonsense to say the test is useless or not accurate. It will also pick up an increased "prostate specific antigen" level from conditions that are not cancer but they also warrant dealing with. It will sometimes miss or return a low level when cancer is present but getting it repeated next year is a way of militating against this, hopefully. In any event it is better than doing nothing. By the time a chap has symptoms things have moved on a tad which might become a cause of regret!

I have 4 friends who have had prostate cancer, one of whom is dying as a result and two friends who had raised PSA not caused by cancer but still needing treatment - antibiotics in one case and surgery to reduce a swelling prostate in another.

I also had prostate cancer, picked up by a routine PSA test, suggested by my GP, with no symptoms at all. In the 12 weeks between a raised PSA beng picked up and a radical prostatectomy my cancer went from two tumours that were contained within the prostate to three tumours which were starting to break through the prostate "capsule". It is when the break out and spread that you are really in trouble with lung, liver kidney and bone cancer as possible things to look forward to if you are unlucky. Compared to these gems a finger up the bum once a year and a simple blood test are pretty small beer.

These days there is a growing tendency to offer MRI scan and a more accurate biopsy under a general anasthaetic since a bit of research called PROMIS was completed which showed how accurate these could be in making an accurate diagnosis of cancer opposed to other conditions that also raise the PSA.

Treatment generally is hormonal tablets or injections, radio therapy or surgery. All have side effects, none of which you would sign up for as a bit of a laugh, but doing nothing seems a pretty dumb alternative to me from where I currently am.

The one piece of advice I give everyone is to research the surgeon if that is the way you feel inclined to go on getting the diagnosis the difference is / can be the difference between impotence or not and urinary incontinence or not. I had the luck to find one of the very best and have suffered no incontinence at all. Sadly my erectile nerves had to go because of the way the cancer was breaking out of the capsule but even that can be overcome though viagra/cialis isn't any use alone! I would rather be alive than able to have fully natural functioning hydraulics though undoubtedly I would prefer both!

Nearly four years since surgery and still clear so begining to think that maybe I got lucky and the surgeon got all of the cancer. Every passing year with no re-appearance means that statistically my odds that it has been dealt with comppletely increase but every July will be an anxious time until I get my annual PSA result!!!!

Don't be put off by statements that PSA tests are no good too inaccurate whatever, go get one, every year and if it comes back raised work out with your medic what's caused it and get that dealt with whatever it is

I’m with Bob and Sako and the other pro -testers on this one . I went to see the Quack last week about , shall we say, a plumbing issue , his first comment was “ your prostate will catch up with you at some time “ . He sent me for blood tests and the results have come back as clear for PSA . He also did a “ Wellman Check “ on a number of other things and I’ve got to go talk about cholesterol next week He won’t do A DRE before a blood test as he says that alone can raise the PSA level.

As an employee I had a full medical every year as part of the company due dilligence to not killing senior managers with stress. In retirement at 62 I’ve realised that I’m not immortal and I’ll listen and act without guilt or embarrassment . I’ve got an arrhythmia and self fund a consultant cardio appointment annually . My mates think I’m crackers but I prefer to think of it this way : next week a LandRover Indy will get £300-400 for an MoT and Service , In May Subaru will get £300 for a service , so £250 to get the best to MoT me I reckon is a bargain .

Had the "well man" cholesterol high, over weight, not enough exercise - yeh yeh yeh I'm fine, don't have time to be messing about exercising and eating pretty food, got a job to do, and fast food fills you up and doesn't waste time.
12-18 months later I had a little indigestion - 3 days later emergency quintuple heart bypass.

Slightly different outlook now, too late maybe, I eat better, exercise more but not enough, but work isn't the be all and end all, the family need me around and I certainly want to be here to enjoy their company.

PSA is embarrassing for you the first time, but the Doctors have done hundreds and it's all in a days work. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
