Well Sam is certainly a heavy boy at just over 8kg! The breeder has been feeding him Royal Canin but from extensive research, I have found out that it is overrated and not as healthy as they claim. Breeders must be on commission.

Once we have finished the bag that we’ve got, we plan to move onto Simpson’s 80:20 grain free food. Stunning food and very natural according to various sources. 80% meat, 20% natural ingredients apparently.

Our local pet shop sells it in small bags so he can try it, then 12kg bags at about £40 if I recall correctly. Sounds a lot for 12kg but it lasts ages apparently, because you don’t need to put much out. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Nice little dog there Thumbs Up

One thing that worries me about Sam is that labs can suffer hip problems which is why they don't need walking much in their first year (relatively speaking). He is so bonkers at the moment (to be expected) that he picked up a knock after stumbling on the conservatory step and limped a bit. I'm sure he'll walk it off but we certainly have to be vigilant when he's on the rampage! LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

My son has an 11 month golden Lab... shes absolutely bonkers !! Laughing

He used to use a throw stick and ball to help with exercise, but she must have gone a bit hard on the pick up and jarred her shoulder requiring a weeks course of anti-inflammatories. She is so mental it proved very hard to keep her calm for a week to rest it.

Lovely dogs though Doc, and well worth the perseverance while they grow a second brain cell and become more normal Very Happy Rolling with laughter

Lovely dogs. I have really enjoyed watching ours growi up. He is 6 months now and 25kg. Our breeder swore by Royal Canin Maxi Junior too. I also read it was not the greatest but he has grown well and is a nice size with good muscle definition

You are right to be cautious with the walks and rough play-the bones don't harden properly until they are 12 months+. I have field walked him and tried to stay off pavements as much as possible. Sticking to the 5 minute rule all the time is virtually impossible-he already has a circle of pals so the walks are often hijacked by playmates! Enjoy their puppy hood-they grow so fast.
