Burnt HID headlamp Reflector unit - help please!

Hi Guys,

I'm after some advice, long while since I have had need of the forum's support as Freelie has been all good! But here we go...

Freelie is an MY11 with factory fitted HID lights and we have it from new, we noticed over time the head light luminance output from the lights on dipped beam has reduced so I replaced with new stock HID lamps which made very little difference in my opinion. Couple of weekends ago I took the headlight unit off the car to clean the lens on it. Once I had the lens separated from the reflected unit I noticed the reflector was BURNT at the top of the unit. The same is also true on other side. So I think this is impacting the lamps projection ability.

So my question to you guys, where can I get 2 new reflects (not new headlight units), their part number etc, has anyone else noticed this issue and if so how did you fix it? I have seen that BMW and Mercedes also suffer from a similar issue at this age point !! Some people have suggested 3M aluminum tape rated at 300degC for heating solutions might help but I'm worried it will just melt and make more of a problem.

Any help much appreciated Thumbs Up

Here are the steps I took to take out the unit and clean the lens and find the burnt reflector, if you are interested please watch and comment.

Interesting video! JLR will just sell you new headlamps. Maybe look on eBay to see if anyone is selling new headlamp reflectors on their own. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

No idea where to get your parts cheap but scrap yard possibly but my advice to one and all is to take off your watch and rings when working on cars, especially electrics. Years ago I watched a Jag auto electrician dead short a unit with his wedding ring, a very nasty burn. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thought the video was excellent Thumbs Up

I very much doubt the reflector is a 'serviceable part'

As Yorky said, breakers are your only option. Ask if they have damaged units that you can cannibalise.

The reflectors are different for LHD and RHD vehicles and different for HAL and Xenon headlamps.

With the age of these headlights I’d be very surprised if you find any with better reflectors. Unless the previous owner(s) drove with only the side lights on Laughing No harm stripping down damaged units to check Thumbs Up MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Ed I understand your thinking..........but Richard has lots of NOS which he dismantles.

This is NOT what the OP needs, I know .......

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FREELANDER-2-Ha...SwTEJaSiPY

but it shows "removed from unused headlamps"

Richard has helped me out many times with 'NON-Servicable Parts'.

Thanks guys for your comments,

The Ebay headlights are for Halogen and not stock HID. I'm hoping someone might know what the Part Number is for the reflector and then I can try RimmerBros who have helped me out in the past.

Varroc make the xenon bulb retaining ring for MY13> and the headlamps are made by Valeo. Check your headlamps for any of these names and start there. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Again many thanks for your suggestion, I will make contact and see what the options are.

In the meantime I have found this web site, they are suggesting replacements for the reflector bowls for around USD $188. Seems a little steep to me.

Any thoughts? Cheers !

You can try changing the original Visteon module with another similar Hella module (3rd generation) which has a more resilient reflector.
Take a look at this: http://www.drive2.ru/l/3636514/
The guy says that the modules are coming from a Skoda Superb.

I doubt you will ever get a precise beam pattern using reflective tape. Even 0.3mm thickness tape would more than likely be enough to degrade the pattern substantially.

found this on eBay, is it what you are looking for ?? Best check 'age' of component before purchase.

....... although the plastic bezel does look very different ??
