My first post as I'm new to Freelander ownership. Finding this a most useful forum.

I recently bought a used TD4 HSE from a main LR dealer.

This weekend I removed the front mats to clean them and noticed that there is a small patch of what appears to be melted carpet in the passenger footwell under the dash. I thought this was most odd as I couldnt imagine what on earth could have caused it.

Now having read the thread on the PTC Heater I just wonder if my car has suffered from some melting compontents that have dropped down onto the carpet. Does this sound plausible or am I putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5.

If it was caused by the PTC Heater I guess I should be asking for a new carpet set and a good check over to ensure that there is no other damage.

Did the last owner smoke, it could be the result of a dropped fag end. The carpets must be man made material and would probably melt when subjected to heat. still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

No evidence that previous owner was a smoker also location of melted carpet is much further forward than would have been likely from a dropped cigarette

Are you really a small, plump, energetic wading bird?


I once melted a car mat while using an inspection light without the shield around the light bulb, maybe the previous owner was investigating something under the dash with a similar lamp? just a thought  At work

Hi Sanderling, and welcome to the forum It’s good to see another birder on the forum if that’s any indication by your name, so maybe there are two of us now if so, you will understand I am not counting chickens's as birds.

As it has been mentioned a melted carpet spot could have been made by almost any hot item, but the suggestion you came with first would not surprise me at all and it is therefore worth checking out. If there has been a PTC heater problem and subsequently the PTC-fuse has been removed P011, or in fact the PTC heater has been replaced P014, then these should have been logged in the service portfolio. However having said that they didn’t log my sunroof recall and I had to ask them to log it in the portfolio later.

I have spoken to my dealer on this and they will be looking at it when I next take the car in.

Interestingly my car had the P014 recall done before it was delivered to me in late December. I have started a new thread on the effectiveness of this.

What about all the other birds in my care on the farm? Owls, Pheasants ,Partridge, Cockoos, Woodpeckers, Sky larks. Moorhens, Ducks, geese, Swans,robins etc etc. Which is amassing really, as all the so called experts claim that 'modern' farming has all but wiped out the rural bird populations. Oh yes there are lots of pigeons too but we are actually trying to wipe them little ers out. At work

If ya got COCK-a-doos mate then ya down under . Owls you can only keep under licence what you'll never get CG, Pheasants (and Red-legged Partridges) are imported and are for shooting, ducks and geese could be just the normal farmyard type kept for eating purposes, woodpeckers - I doubt it, as you lot cut down all the trees, which admittedly does give some room for Skylarks to breed but then you FARMERS go and plough up their nests in the spring, by swans you mean Mute Swans, and Moorhens - they only exist because you make artificial ponds to cash in on angling enthusiasts. Which leaves Robins and which are pretty common all over the UK in all sorts of environments.

Tell me about Corn Buntings for example - You lot ( farmers that produce the food we eat) have almost totally destroyed the breeding habitat which has desimated the population plus many other species as well

I live in a residential area and admittedly, we have numerous feeders in the garden - but we have woodpeckers, owls, pheasants, partridges & ducks visiting (plus the wagtails !).

I have a family of little owls in a box at the end of my garden, I just nailed the box to the tree and the owls were keen to move in( I dont charge them any rent). Sadly the barn owls house got destroyed when kids burnt down my barn but they are still around , I just don't know where they now live. Its always at treat at ploughing time to see all the lapwings following me around the fields in search of food in the freshly turned soil,although they tend to get out numbered by the brutish bullying seagulls.
The river banks have healthy colonies of sand martins, and yes there are still corn buntings around  At work
