Typical ...everything in bits and I need another gasket ..

My fault but just thought I’d share my frustration... With a few posts recently talking about this subject and me having all the bits and bobs required to change cam belt and water pump I’ve decided it’s a nice enough day to get this job done,so outside in the sun I got out all my tools out,car on stands etc. Methodically removed everything locked off cam ,crank and flywheel. At the water pump stage all cleaned ready to put new one on and hastily opened bag with gasket in and accidentally ripped the dam thing in half . Had to order a new one from dealer coming tomorrow. Really peed off . Always seems to happen when you think you’ve got all the bits you need for a job , so a mornings job has now become a 2 day one . Did notice the gasket that came off was more like tin compared to the new one which was almost paper so maybe it’s a good thing I’m putting a genuine one on . Couldn’t believe how tight the crank pully bolt was all the way out was tight,so that’s having a genuine new bolt too.

These things happen!

Had my cambelt changed last month, the mechanic said it took them ages to get the crank pully bolt off too. That's why I'd rather pay someone to do it, I'm more than capable, but if it snaps it's their problem 👍

We used to have gasket paper when all those many years ago I was in the trade and if stuck make one.

You roughly cut to size and then hold firm against the mating surface of your pump and get a really small hammer and lightly strike at an angle. for bolt holes use a hammer with a rounded end and strike direct very lightly.

If a bolt snaps coming out, it will be their problem but their time rectifying it will be at your expense! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Not when it's a fixed price job, I made sure of that before booking in.

So did you get a fixed price including the possibility of removing a broken crankshaft bolt? I doubt it!

Fixed price on all things (cars, building work, decorating work, car spraying, dental work etc etc) are all based on a standard job with no unforeseen circumstances arising that is going to cost the garage time and money. Why should the garage guarantee that everything is how it should be when they strip the car down? For all they know some idiot could have been the last person to work on it and hammered the crank bolt in! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
