The lasers in CD players are notorious for failing after a few years.

I have been through this a few times and the only way forward with the CDs is to find a replacement drive and fit it. Try eBay. Replacing the laser is a non starter. There is a trick that works sometimes which is that if you get the circuit board out for the CD player they sometimes have a preset potentiometer on the board. With this you can crank up the current through the laser and you have nothing to lose by trying it. I believe that most hifi systems are thrown away because of the CD laser issues. I have been through a number of CD and DVD players which only last a few years and some have been from expensive as well as cheap Hi Fi systems (ie they all have the same parts in them anyway). Having said that I do have a Phillips CD player that is about 30 years old and seems to go on and on but perhaps they built them better then.

thought It might not be worth fixing, had it for over 20yrs so can't complain, had my moneys worth got played most days, don't think I'll try to take it to bits (i'd have a go at anything I can hit with a big hammer or a set of spanners )
