Electric power trailer

Reading an article about electric vehicles in the FT this morning and someone had commented as follows. Not sure that I would be happy having a trailer pushing me from behind though. Shocked Sounds horrendous.

One possible solution to all of these requirements would be a standard battery trailer hitch and electrical connection offered as an option for EVs purchased with some long range trips in mind. Here's how it would work.

A) EVs with the optional hitch would also feature a larger electric motor and brakes, providing premium power / acceleration / braking around town, matching traditional expectations left over from IC options.

B) All the previous obstacles to adopting standard battery packs go away with this plan. Any new battery tech can be offered behind that trailer hitch. Payback periods can be controlled. Etc.

Is it not just more batteries in a trailer when I read it it does not say the trailer is pushing the vehicle. Shocked

Yes you might be right, I read it originally as a battery supply plus a motor in the trailer which would have all sorts of implications.

Before I decided to go for my 2nd Freelander, I considered buying a PHEV Outlander, and I was on their forum for a few years.

Someone had acquired a scrap PHEV and was looking for a use. Amongst the many suggestions was an electrically assisted/powered trailer/caravan. As far as I know this was as far as it got, and the scrapped PHEV was put up for resale.

Before anyone starts this project be warned, if you think that the Freelander is complicated electronically, you would be amazed at the complexity of the PHEV. It is a 4x4 but not as we know it, or to my mind, not as good. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
