The dipstick is a poor design and can be inaccurate, so it is possible that you had less oil than you thought. I recently did an intermediate oil change (without changing filter), took out 5.2 litres and put back 5.2 litres, thinking I would then top up using the dipstick. However, despite wiping clean before insertion, there seemed to always be a smear of oil all the way up the shaft and I could only gauge the level by trying to see where the oil was thicker.

Alternatively I guess it is possible that an oil leak into the combustion side of the cylinders would allow you to burn it in 3 weeks with minimal smoke? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Why don't you introduce yourself before joining the forum just to resolve a specific problem that you have?

Even a 'Hi' or a 'Thank you' on your post wouldn't go amiss.

As to resolving your problem, I'm sure there's a Land Rover dealer not that far away from you.
These guys are thoroughly trained and have all the diagnostic equipment that will see your problem resolved.
Oh, remember to take your wallet with you as they will charge, but I suppose you won't mind as long as it gets to the bottom of your issue.

Good luck Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Agree 'iain', I didn't know it was a prerequisite to asking a question. Entirely up to the member by choice, and more than likely the problem takes precedence over saying 'hello' which could always come later if need be, and by becoming a member he/she has already joined the Forum.

Unfortunately oil pressure /level senors can fail just like anything else. The car does a test when ignition is turned on but I'm not sure what parts of the oil alarm is actually tested , maybe the sensor can fail without a fail warning appearing. I'm now going to search and see if I can find out how the oil pressure/ level is actually monitored. Maybe someone on this forum already knows.

My advise is to have it mended. But you will have to decide whether it's worth mending it or selling it as a non-runner. Jules

Totally agree & would add that if I got told to introduce myself before asking a question like this one on a forum at a time when clearly my attention is focused on having no working car & a potentially large bill, I'd be inclined to draw my own opinion of the people on it!

Hopefully the OP will get some help with his problem, I'm new to the FL2 forum too and also to FL2 as a car so sadly can't offer anything other than general advice about getting the car to a local specialist, but am a member on D3/4 & also Def2 & there are some really helpful people on both who offer advice & assistance when other members have dramas to sort out. Advice like whether to get the engine rebuilt, who to go to locally, whether it's better to get a replacement engine etc.

Good luck to the guy.

Just because someone has joined and therefore automatically becomes a forum member, site rules preclude them from advertising their wares [without paying for an advert], IMO this is a similar situation - joining a forum just to sort out their own specific problem and quite possibly never to be heard of again.
Why would the OP give themselves such a negative forum name if they intend to stay, contribute and enjoy the forum on a long term basis?
[it's common knowledge that garages are known to join car forums when stumped with a problem]

As said, it is just common courtesy where someone would at least introduce themselves or even just a few courteous words such as 'hi', 'please' or 'thanks' .... anyway, that's just my opinion, maybe it's a North/South thing! FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Sorry cannot help with your FL but on my brothers mini the garage said when this happened that the oil level sensor had cooked so wouldn't alert him.

Good luck. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Does anyone know for sure that we have a level sensor? I've seen so many posts on motorcycle forums moaning that their oil warning light didn't come on to warn them that their level was too low. When in fact it's an oil PRESSURE warning lamp. The problem with those is that invariably by the time you have no pressure the damage is done. Rolling Eyes MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Get in touch with Skan 4x4 breakers , you will find them on Google. They may be able to help with an engine as they break wrecked Freelanders Thumbs Up

I know it's a tough call but £5000 to repair a seven year old vehicle has to be seriously thought about whether or not you would be better scrapping the car , or selling it as a non runner if the rest of it is nice. Then moving on to another car . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
