It's like most insurances - could be considered a waste of money if you never need it but a godsend if you do.

We've had various LR cars including two Freelander 2s (with two on the drive for four years) for more than ten years and 200k+ miles and they have proved extremely reliable. However, when my cam snapped last September and I found myself stranded in poor weather on a dual carriageway without a hard shoulder - I was very grateful that I had insurance in place and someone to call.

I clipped a chunk of metal (I think) while travelling down the M6 (in my Jaguar - not the Freelie) which caused an instant deflation of the NS front tyre. I made it to the hard shoulder OK and called Green Flag. The mechanic who turned up happily changed the wheel for my space-saver spare. He then phoned round some local tyre shops to find one who had in stock an exact match for the tyre I had destroyed, made an appointment for me to have one fitted, and made sure I had directions to find the relevant tyre shop. Top class service. However - Green Flag operate a 'no claims discount' - so this call out cost me a small increase in premium the following year. Currently enjoying:

2013 BMW X3 20D M-Sport Auto
2007 Jaguar XK 4.2 Coupe

Thanks for all the replies and info. I'm still undecided although GF look better on the deal they offer as they are cheaper than RAC the service from both looks very good.

I've been with the RAC for well over 50 years as a schoolmate joined the RAC as a motorcycle patrolman - saluting and all - and he signed up all of his classmates, and I suspect good a good bonus.

thanks to SkyeGuy , for your comment, much appreciated, with regard to no claims discount, the price goes up every year anyway , I am on basic recovery, never yet seen it go down except in the early years, I had accrued 3 years no discount but saw that if I simply rejoined as a new member it was cheaper than paying the renewal . . . Rolling with laughter

Thanks for the replies and info.

In the end I decided to stick with the RAC as they made me a "thinking of leaving us" option that was slightly better value than others and I had been with them for over 50 years - when it cost three guinees a year, that's £3.15 in this new fangled money.
