Low mileage drivers

Hi
Does anyone drive low miles every day in a FL2 as i only do 7-8 miles to work and then same back and was worried about the DPF?
I usually get to work early to get a parking spot so sit in the car for 10-15 mins with engine running in winter to keep warm - is this a problem in a diesel with DPF?

I've just got a deal worked out on a 2013 TD4 but the DPF is worrying me as i currently drive a petrol car i'm not sure if it's a no no

The LR Experience vehicles do low mileage with a lot of idling, and don't seem to have a problem. I was told once by an instructor that they use premium grade fuel and this obviates any dpf problems.
I can't recall anyone having dpf problems on here with the UK spec - the earlier continental spec were notorious.
I think you would be fine, so long as you do the occasional long run to blast it out, but don't try it with a DS - they have massive dpf-related oil dilution problems if just used for short journeys.
edit: more to the point, diesels are slow to heat up. The FL2 has electric assistance in cold weather, but if you are only doing short journeys you may need to get a battery chargerl. You will also get pretty poor fuel consumption for the same reason. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

DS? - Discovery Sport?
Poor mpg isn't really a concern as i used to have hot hatches (VXRs, STs, etc) that would do 22-23mpg
I only use the car to get to + from work but like something comfy, modern and nice to look at, i also like to "tart up" my cars not in a boy racer way but OEM+ way so the FL is ideal.
Mt last FL2 (2009my with no DPF) i added facelift front bumper/ rear lights/ side steps, interior trims, etc and loved that until things startred to go wrong.

Do i buy this 1 and not worry about DPF a i need it to be reliable?

When I bought my 2nd FL2, I was a bit apprehensive of having a DPF as I only do a few miles every day.
ie distance to my vegetable plot in the field = 0.5 miles
distance to pheasant pen =0.75 miles
distance to local shoot for picking up = 1 mile
OK by now you should realise I'm a low mileage user but I've never had any associated problems regarding DPF.
I do the occasional 'blow out' on a trip to Exeter and the annual trip up to Cumbria but that's about it.
Maybe I'm lucky, maybe I should have kept quiet and not invited trouble. 11 GS Bali Blue

Yes, DS = discovery sport.
I think you would need to do an occasional long run to clear the DPF. I never had trouble with mine, but I do longer journeys.
Hopefully others on here will be better able to advise, but I would not buy a diesel just to do short runs, DPF or not. Diesel is just desperately inefficient when cold.

Changed bases at work a few months ago and went from a 32 mile round trip which included about 20 miles of motorway driving to an 11 mile round trip all of which is stop,start and have not had any issues with my 2012 with DPF. It will get a longer run most weekends if I am out and about, but I don`t go out my way to give it a long run. I certainly have no concerns with the DPF system being unreliable. Thumbs Up

Thanks for posting this topic. I bought my Fl2 last November, and have also been wondering about this issue.

Where I live (Isle of Skye), we don't have motorways Exclamation so there's no-where to do a fast DPF-regenerating run. My Fl2 does a mixture of short trips (two or three per day, 2 - 5 miles each) plus (at least weekly) a run of 25-or-more miles at 50mph or so.

Is this kind of use going to be enough to keep the DPF clean?

PS - the Freelie has been totally awesome in the recent snow. My wife won't drive her little hatchback any more and insists on 'borrowing' my Freelie. Currently enjoying:

I do mixed distances sometimes 20 plus miles for work I live only 1.5 miles away from work and use my Freelander more then the works van as its more comfortable to drive. On a few occasions I drive to work then home in the evening to hear the Dpf pinging underneath as it seams to warm up quite quickly on my 2014 Freelander.

Was told by the Service Manager in my local dealers that the Freelander has an earlier level of DPF that really does not suffer significant problems. Later and more efficient versions such as in the Discovery Sport suffer far more if only used for short journeys.

I mostly do short trips of 4 miles and don't have dpf problems. I monitor mine out of curiosity to see when it's regenerated. Yer can see the "km since last regeneration" figure in the engine computer with a diagnostic tool - if the tool yer have can access that menu. Resets to 0 when regeneration has occurred then starts counting up again. As above if it's not long since regeneration occurred and still hotter than it would normally be (due to the process involved) yer can hear the exhaust ping as it cools when the engines switched oft.

Regeneration distance varies. I assume this is down to if it was able to fully complete the regeneration cycle previously and what sort of motoring yer do. Mines local roads only so max 40mph. Some of that is stationary in traffic so I'm still burning fuel. I take it for a quick 8 mile spin at 60mph once a month if I've only been doing local trips. It will still regenerate at 40mph but takes longer to do. If it doesn't fully complete I notice it's not that many km's before it regenerates again, when compared to typical lengths of km's between regenerations. Freelanders are clever like that. Wink

I've travelled at 70mph for 3 hours before and it hasn't regenerated even though the km's since last regeneration is reasonably high. It has regenerated within the next 2 weeks at 40mph max after this so I get the feeling it chooses when to regenerate based on how full it is as opposed to thinking "we're at speed and it's nearly full so we may as well do it now". Hippo's videos - Honorary Tratterer

A wheel barrow might be more suitable for your needs? Although get a pre 2010 model that doesnt have DPF Rolling with laughter Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Rob my miles are the same as yours. I’ve had my car from new coming up 4 years on the 1st March I’ve never had a dpf problem. Every 12 weeks or so I do a 40mile commute but there has been an issue. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

I'm a very low mileage driver other than a very occasional trip around the country & got a petrol engine, also put 98 in it as suggested by my mechanic many years ago with previous car. The cars average city speed is about 32 kph. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
