As per the title, what tends to be the better gearbox?

What about it terms of resale/residual value?

When I got mine i said that I wasn't old enough for an auto but it has been the best decision yet non of that faffing about changing gears

I’ve owned both TD4 manual and SD4 Auto, both are great but I prefer the auto. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

As Largered correctly pointed out, having recently become an old fart, it’s auto every time now!

Having had examples of each, it suits the car and is much more useful off road and when towing, allows the use of the more powerful TD4 and it also avoids being at the mercy of a slightly fragile clutch

Auto every time , all this stuff about “ real driving “ is bolleaux “ You don’t catch Lewis Hamilton pressing a clutch pedal do you ? Every autobox worth mentioning these days has a manual shift option if you need it. The only reason people like LR even still list a manual is to put a lower cost vehicle on the road. Then you come to residual value , try selling a high specification manual vehicle these days . The clutch is one of the weakest parts of a Freelander 2.
Any towing or Off-roading buy an automatic. only buy a manual if you a high motorway user.
and if your a high motorway user look at another car ?

I drive a Manual HSE, would prefer an automatic, as for folks saying fragile clutch, 160,000 miles and original clutch still fine.

Never thought I would say this but I would have an auto if I could choose again.

Have you ever tried manoeuvring a trailer off road? Mine were quick to start burning with little provocation. This is where auto’s really come into their own

As the number of speed bumps increase the auto is the obvious choice, why exercise the left leg over a hundred times a day, now if the accelerator had a stronger spring there may well be an argument for a manual box as a leg exercise. if you wish to take charge of the gear change you can, you just don't need a clutch. Autos will soon be more economical than manuals and may already be so with the greater number of ratios to keep the engine in the most economical rev range. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

The old auto boxes were poor but once you have had a modern auto you just don't want to go back to a manual. With normal auto, sport mode and command shift you have got it all.

Having had a manual Td5 Discovery for 11 years and done lots of towing with it (including motorway traffic jams) I knew the next car was always going to be an auto, Sd4 Freelander as it turned out. Having read about fragile clutches on manual Freelanders the Td4 manual was never going to be an option.
In all aspects, except perhaps fuel economy which could be a little better (I was well aware of this before buying), Im delighted with the Sd4.  Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
