Nearly got scammed!

Nearly got scammed! My wife wanted a particular Barbour coat for dog walking that was £199. Didn’t have her size in store so I went online. It soon became obvious that it was out of stock everywhere as it was no longer being made. I then found just one store brandonshouseofflowers.com that not only had it in stock but was on sale for £95. Bargain. I ordered it immediately. Paid on a debit card and....the transaction was cancelled. Had a call from Barclays fraud unit almost immediately asking if I had just spent £107 on a Chinese web site. I told them no and they cancelled the card. Apparently, Chinese crooks are starting what looks to be UK/US based companies and you either get nothing or a counterfeit item. Lesson learned. If it’s too good to be true....... Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

The first thing I do is check the ‘contact us’ if there is no address, just an online form, I walk away. It’s all too easy to get scammed and I have nearly fallen victim more than once. I now do some digging on the site and very quickly you can ascertain that they are hiding something.

Did you get this message? I’ve just pretended to place an order using false details throughout and I made up a credit card number off the top of my head. Connection via VPN I might add.

Yes. Got that message then Barclays started contacting me within minutes. They blocked that transaction. I called them back after a while and said I wanted that card cancelled. They cancelled my card and a new one is on its way as that website had my card details. Checked the site out and it’s registered to someone with a Chinese name. Clever thing is, Barclays asked whether I used Apple Pay on my iPhone and when I told them yes, they deleted the card from my app and installed the new one almost immediately. They said my new card is active and I can use it straight away on my iPhone. The welcome email I got after signing up gave a rather strange reply address too - nourconyheactme@gmail.com - What sort of address is that for a so called web trading company?? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I have noticed that eBay is being quietly taken over by Chinese traders who list items as being sent from the UK but then if they are sent at all they come from mainland China - often they suddenly appear to be "out of stock" and you have to actively pursue refunds otherwise they get your money for nothing. They must be making a fortune from uncompleted purchases for relatively small amounts that people do not chase up.
One to watch out for - always check seller details and feedback (although that is no longer as reliable as it used to be) No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Strange that the bank could swap card details on Apple Pay, would have thought you needed to do that yourself

I never speak to the fraud team when they call me, always get number myself and phone them back

Had to do this on Friday as they wouldn’t authorise my £8.50 of puddings at Wetherspoons as the card input, were you hold the camera above your card had put 10/2020 instead of 10/20 and after 4 attempts I used a different card Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I worked for a short while at a place selling shooting goods and one day had an email with credit card details asking for about £1500 worth of various items to be delivered to Hong Kong. Sounded a bit suspicious so I called Barclaycard and gave them the details and they said that the owner of the card lives in the USA. I suggested that this was a scam and perhaps they should inform the card holder that his card was being used fraudulently and they said that they couldn't do that for data protection reasons! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

At the other end of the scale my son was talking to his Porsche dealer and they told him that last year a young female student had come in looking for a very specific car which was in stock costing about £100k. She seemed to know what she was talking about and after some discussion about the fact that as a student she wouldn't get finance she agreed to buy it and produced a rather anonymous looking black card with her name on it. They swiped the card for a deposit and almost immediately the dealer's phone rang and asked to speak to her and then the dealer. It was her private Swiss Bank who promptly transferred the rest of funds. Different set of rules for these people I think. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
