I wonder if you have a throttle body problem? One of it's functions is to help stop the engine. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The engine is electronically-controlled so disconnecting the battery would stop it. |

If its diesel you need to check that the sump oil has not been contaminated with it. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I suspect the 'running on' is a throttle body flap problem.
