Light snow:-use normal mode or GG+snow terrain response

Just wondering what people use?

Have around 3-4cm on the road at the moment, a bit slushy in parts though still slippery.

Is it best to leave it in normal mode or select the terrain response snow mode??

Also can it do harm if you use GGS mode on the road and there are patches of road that are ok ie don't have snow?

Yesterday morning on a very slippery, steep, downhill slope, I decided to see what the hill descent control would do... By mistake, I switched the traction control off instead - that was fun! Smile

My view is that normal mode is good, but GGS makes a big difference.

Biggest difference, though is tyres! I got new tyres on the front on Thursday and the difference is well worth the money! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Personally i'd use GGS, if you've got an auto it will generally start in a higher gear, change up earlier and reduce the throttle response to lessen the chance of wheels spinning as you move off. In a manual I'd recommend starting in second and again the throttle response is reduced.

No harm in using GGS on normal road conditions but you can change settings on the move without causing any problems.

I put my winter tyres on in October. Was out today and yes M+S tyres (big block treads) made a difference. When it becomes a problem is when front wheel cars "spin" their wheel, it polishes the compacted snow and forms ice ....... and not even M+S are not going to get a grip on that. I steer the vehicle and go for fresh snow that hasn't been broken.

See how it drives in normal first, if you feel like your not getting anywhere or slipping stick it in snow mode and let the car do the work!

In normal mode, when you pull away, the traction is split 50 / 50 between front and rear and then switches to 90 / 10 ratio front and rear, for economy. In GGS Mode it switches to 60 /40. I have found GGS mode in the dry to be ...... like somethings not right.

As I understand it GGS Mode dulls the throttle response, to prevent potential wheel spin and, if you like, increase the sensitivity of the sensors so the vehicle reacts quicker to slippages.

DSC will cut power to wheels that are slipping, so they have a chance to regain traction. This can create problems when pulling away or trying to go up hills with momentum. Advice when not being able to pull away is to switch the DSC off and once moving switch it back on. With hills, if all 4 wheels slip you can suddenly end up with no power, so in GGS mode a steady ascent seems to be called for, but if you want momentum, maybe Sand mode should be selected first which allows the power to continue driving the wheels if they are slipping.

Just what I have gleened, happy to be corrected.

Used GGS a few times on Sunday morning on roads of compacted snow that had not been gritted.

Normal 2 -wheel drive cars were not able to get any traction.

The FL2 was unstoppable but much credit is due to my Nokian Weatherproofs Thumbs Up FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

GGS = Grass Gravel Snow. The first stop round on your mode control in front of the gear stick. But if you are in Devon, I would guess you won’t need the S that often! Sad 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

there is no right or wrong answer

I use GGS when i get in my car and my feet have been slipping everywhere on ice, where that is frozen pathway or frozen under snow, or just switch it on when ever i feel like i want it to help if needed, even in wet torrential rain etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
