Tyre noise

When test driving FL2 I was aware that there was a fair amount of tyre noise entering the cabin when driving over potholes and broken surfaces. I got the impression that 17 inch wheels were perhaps a tad quieter, so went for the 17s (with Good Years).

During a recent motorway journey the tyre noise was very noticable over certain surfaces. Is anyone else bothered by this noise? I have a Defender too, and because of its separate chassis road noise is only faintly audible.

Austen.

I agree with CG, My defender was louder than concorde!

Also having a seperate chassis makes noise worse.

What are you tyre pressures like? I have gone from 18" to 19" and there is not really much difference, but then again there was never much tyre noise to begin with. But you will notice more noise when it's wet and cold. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Pressures are at 37. I have older separate chassis Rovers also and have never been aware of tyre noise to this extent.
On certain new tar surfaces the FL2 is dead quiet, but on concrete the tyre noise is very noticable.
Should I reduce the pressures as per the book? 37 was what it came with and I have left them this way in the assumption that wear could be less.

32 psi all round on 17's. My Continental 4x4's are very quiet. I have heard mixed views re. the Goodyears, but I think they're comparable. Tyre pressures will have a significant impact on tyre noise, tyre wear, handling and will affect fuel economy too.
