else I could add to the oil apart from sawdust to make it less noisy ?

Surely since it's a bearing problem then the oil isn't going to help. The bearing is f ed and it won't heal. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Noisy diff = the damage is done.

What you should have been doing is changing the oil on a regular basis - not according to LR who say you replace the oil when the diff fails. I had a sump plug in mine so it was a simple job every service to change the oil.

Contact Austin at Bell engineering, he does a replacement diff with an upgraded pinion bearing - will even fit it for you, for a fee. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

FL2 does not have a front diff - Transfer box / unit and they just break. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Isn't there a differential in the gearbox for the front?

My take is the "DIFF" is incorporated in the gearbox and uses the same oil.

The M66EHA50 manual transmission is a 6 speed unit manufactured by Getrag-Ford in Cologne, Germany. The transmission is a highly compact 4 shaft design, incorporating the front final drive gear, and is adapted for All Wheel Drive (AWD) by providing a connection from the final drive carrier to the Power Transfer Unit. The transmission is capable of transferring high torque from the engine.

Differential
The differential distributes drive from the transmission equally between the LH and RH front half shafts and also provides drive torque to the rear differential via the power transfer unit. The differential is located at the rear of the transmission housing. Both sides of the differential are connected to the LH and RH drive shafts, supplying torque to the front wheels The differential is also connected to the Power Transfer Unit via a splined shaft to the RH side of the transmission, supplying torque to the rear driveline.

sort of a side note.

I stuck a rare earth magnet to my rear diff filler bolt a few months back and intend to change the oil with my next engine oil change (~165000km - I do engine oil/filters every 4 moths). I'm curious to see if any substantial metal bits stick to that when removed.

on another note.......

I like my MY2011 TD4 (manual) even though the passenger door's central locking won't open now, since about 2 weeks ago. Search here shows that the DC motor could have failed so I'm going to rip that door apart and change bushes in the larger motor very soon.

Many years ago a friend of mine was getting concerned about his noisy manual gearbox. For some reason he decided to top up the oil with the engine running. The EP80 oil came in a plastic squeezy bottle with a polythene pipe sticking out of the top. Unfortunately he pushed the pipe in too far and it got caught and dragged in by the rotating gears. After a lot of chomping noises the gearbox seemed to be a fair bit quieter after that but with the occasional difficult gear change as some of the chewy bits worked their way around. He went on for miles afterwards though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
