When Hammond crashed the electric car on Amazon. It kept burning several times over a couple of days after being extingished.imagine the traffic chaos if a lithium car burns like that on m1 or m25 At work

When we were testing good sized (50AH) lithium batteries a coup[le of years ago, we put them inside a steel cabinet, inside a shipping container with heat sensors and a big notice saying "if fire suspected DO NOT attempt to open door - let it burn".
The idea being the heat generated shouldn't have melted the first steel cabinet, let alone the shipping container.

Fighting the fire would have been pointless, you would have to open the door which would subject the fire fighters to unnecessary risk, and the only way of fighting the fire would be with sand!

can't imagine how they would deal with a fire at the roadside with a large amount of lithium involved.

Sorry but IMHO lithium batteries are a short term answer, to a real problem - we are going to run out of fossil fuels eventually. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

There are still vast deposits of fossil fuels under our feet in the UK alone, but they are now deemed to expensive to mine.

I live an area where there used to be dozens of coal pits, and hence we now have a lot of ex miners around. They all say the coal seams are still heaving with good quality coal but is too expensive for the mining companies to extract... as opposed to the cheap imported coal that needs to 3 times as much to burn as efficiently as UK coal.

Then there is the oil in the middle east and the Asian continent that is being (and always has been) used as a bargaining tool. Saudi and Dubai etc are vastly in debt, more so the the UK which is one small reason why they want the prices high.

Yes fossil fuels will eventually run out, but the use of viable batteries for everything is a complete short sighted joke.

morning rant over

Present mad trend is home batteries that store spare solar energy. They cost about £5k yet store about £2 of power.yet only charge well in summer when you least need the power At work
