“Snow” Tyres & wheels

FL2 fit Dakar Desert Track Tyres on steel wheels found on eBay. However, vendor is selling them as “Snow” tyres! Rolling with laughter

The very same tyres as I have on my FL2

They are made by INSA. Dakar Turbos 235 65 17

I am sure they would be great on the rough and crossing a desert etc. But without low temperature pliability and multiple sipes in the tread blocks they could be worrying in snow and, especially, ice.

mmm wonder if they would fit a Disco Sport?

Forget snow, but I used to run the FL2 on full mud Goodyear MTRs, and they were great when driving through water (think outside lane M56) as they refused point blank to aquaplane. Absolutely brilliant in mud that would stop a Defender on road tyres, having had to pull out a 110 on one occasion. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I've only had my INSA's for 6 months. I have driven on road/motorway, mud/muck (especially where I live) also in snow and ice.

I consider myself to be a competent drive and you drive with the conditions of the road. Some may had read my (Off Topic) post about a Scout Rescue I was involved in during the recent snow/ice in December.

Capable vehicle, with capable driver.

Dunkley, the seller of the tyres has now had these tyres on eBay 3 times. twice at £250 start price on short duration auctions (always with a reserve) Check "completed items"

Now they are at £100 start price, he really wants to sell them, BUT he won't be giving them away Sad

I picked up a set of 5 on eBay last September at £170, and yes I spent another £25.00 on steel wheel nuts.

They are not for me, LR. I don’t need any more than “Road” grip for my driving. Have Avon Ranger Ice fitted at present on some nice 17” Type 2 alloys. Also have 19” Triple Sports for summer. I only flagged them up as they are clearly rough terrain tyres yet he is selling as “Snow” tyres where there is no chance of a mountain or ice symbol on tyres like that.

I guess all this simply raises the question of what the ‘S’ on a M+S tyre really means? Without the mountain or ice symbol, I would presume that the rubber is a standard composition rather than a low temp one. A chunky tread on a normal tyre can sometimes still work reasonably in snow even if the tyre is useless on hard-packed frozen snow or ice (I’ve had Michelin XS sand tyres on snow and as long as the treads were reasonably new and sharp and the tyres given extra inflation, the snow performance wasn’t too bad).

Insa give these a M+S stamp and a 5/5 rating for snow, whatever that means! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

ALL ..... INSA tyres M+S are retreads it states that, in the rubber moulding 'on the tyre'

Can't see a speed rating on the pics but I doubt whether retreads would have a sufficient speed rating for an FL2. In which case would probably void your insurance.
Edit: yes, they are Q rated. Max 99mph. Not suitable for FL2. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

FL2 is fitted with V rated tyres. Q rated tyres are rated at 99 mph, which is lower than the top speed of the vehicle. This is very likely to invalidate your insurance - at the very least you would need to discuss it with your insurers. See for example https://www.blackcircles.com/general/speedrating

That said, I see that LR did specify a Q rated tyre (Wrangler MT/R) as an accessory, but I imagine this would have been for special purposes. Check with insurers before you buy! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
