After trip to Austen peace is now restored. Amazing what you will put up with by turning radio up. Thanks to Bell Engineering. Great job, great service. Andy Freelander2 HSE (59 Plate, MY10 spec) |

6 weeks out of Warranty and I think the rear diff bearing is failing. Local mechanic took it for a test drive and seems to think the noise (a sort of howling noise not unlike the wind blowing) emanates from the diff. Off to Fews at Charfield this am for definitive prognosis and hopefully fixed under warranty. Failing that a trip to Austen Bell. Only done 30k with minimal off road work BOOLLOXS. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I find it hard to believe such a late car would still have a diff failure.

Yes, new pirelli tyres all round. Both I and mechanical have done the wheel bearings test both static and moving (swerving left and right) so left with the quandary. The noise only seems to come on after driving a few miles and does vary in intensity and is most pronounced when backing off on the accelerator. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Good luck in finding out the culprit and convincing LR to put it right then as you seem to have ruled out a few gremlins already. Don't forget to update us all. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

How long have the new tyres been on? Having experienced diff and wheel bearing issues they would be present as soon as you pulled away. It's not turbo whine I suppose? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I initially attributed the whine to the tyres as I was down to circa 3mm. New tyres fitted on Tuesday of this week - scorpion zeros on all four wheels with tracking and balancing.

Just back from M J Fews - they took it for a test drive and put it up on their ramps and confirmed a worn bearing in Diff. The good news is they can do the repair under warranty PHEW. Booked in for the 15th December MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Like YB, I am amazed to hear of such a late car with diff bearing issues. It should have the diff with the larger bearing, so really shouldn't have that problem. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
