A few days ago I noticed a small patch of clean oil on my garage floor roughly inline with where the diff. is located.
I took it to my local indie (a Land rover specialist) to look at and he told me the RNS driveshaft oil seal is leaking.
He said the seal is cheap, about £5, but needs a special tool to change it, which he could get.
He said it would be about an hours labout so not terrible, however he told me he’d never seen one need changing before which surprised me.
Has anyone else had a problem with driveshaft oil seals? Derek Hill

Mine leaks a little.

Not enough to drip but enough to attract dirt.

I will need to replace it some day.

I think that MrRover75 replace this seal when he repaired the pinion bearing he may know about any special tools needed

Here is a picture to show the dirt. (If I get a chance I'll take a better picture and post it here)

Note: the opposite side is clean

Not a FL2 but the same setup. I’m having one replaced under warranty on my 2012 Evoque tomorrow.

I had a weep from about 40,000 miles exactly like the photo above but did not result in any drips on the ground.

I just monitored it and the diff oil level.

Problem was solved at 55,000 miles when I fitted a new diff  FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

Weeping is OK, dripping is not. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

No special tools need to replace the driveshaft seal on the rear diff. You need to pull out the driveshaft first, then pull out the seal with standard tools as any other shaft seal. The new seal shall be pressed in squarely until its face is approx 1mm below the face of the bore.

If we are talking about the pinion shaft seal, the story is different.

Edit:
The left hand side drive shaft is situated in a "pocket" in the diff casting, making no space/edge for leveling out the driveshaft.
It may require a special LR tool to pull the LH side driveshaft out of the diff with the diff in situ due to limited space, and it is probably this your mechanics is referring to. A large flat screwdriver through the hole on the top of the flange works well, but not with the diff in situ I think (newer tried)

I’ve had the seal replaced at no cost to me.
The service manager told me he suspected they may have damaged the seal when inserting the driveshaft after a full differential oil change they’d done a few weeks previously, when they removed the diff. He said he saw a nick in the seal and although he wasn’t sure suspected the oil leak was down to them.
Now, there’s two ways of looking at his comments, but my view was that he could have kept that to himself and said nothing about it to me. Instead he chose to come clean and treat it as a warranty repair against their workmanship.
I would have been none the wiser if I’d been presented with a bill for the repair so I was very greatful for his honesty and professionalism in dealing with it.
I’ve been to them twice now and find them very good. JSF4x4, Norwich. Definitely recommended. Derek Hill
