Headlamp wiring burn out

Went to change the headlamp bulbs today, read up on it bought the H11's as per handbook. Got the lamp out and found that it wasn't the bulb but the connector which was burnt and the insulation melted. Also the bulbs are in fact HB3's!

So now I'll be calling the auto electrician on Monday to put on a new connector, damn! 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

I have spare genuine LR bulb holders, with 'flying leads' should you need them.

PM me and I will send them to you.

This is a photo of the burnt out connector to my headlamp. I tried LR parts but they will only sell the complete headlamp loom for goodness knows ho much! Largered helpfully sent a lead but unfortunately it was for an earlier year.

Even the handbook is wrong stating the bulbs are H11 whereas they are HB3's!

Hi, the connector you show in the photo above is 'water resistant' (red bellows) . It would normally fit on the outside of a lamp cluster, like the fog or driving lamps.

I thought it was a bulb holder inside of a lamp cluster, which holds the bulb itself, that you had problems with ??

I will have to have a look and see if I have one of those. Smile

This is an example of the bulb, the connector slots onto the two pins.

Thanks for looking out the connector above, I can't see if it will fit. 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

You could try Paul at Land Rover Connectors on ebay. He's sorted me out with a few things in the past.

Ebay shop is here .... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Land-Rover-Connectors

Or email him here ... lr_connectors@btinternet.com

He can be found as PaulMc on the D2BC forum too - http://www.thed2boysclub.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=60

Type this number into eBay search box eBay Item No. 282444438217

this is the connector ...... you will notice it is ceramic ...... could this be why your original connector over heated and caused arcing ??

Hi all and thanks,

I got hold of a pair but they are plastic, however I've put one in the offending head lamp and it now works. I went to a LR dealer and they only list the entire headlamp loom!!!!

I will also get pair of the ceramic ones Largered suggested, they look like a better long term solution.

Although the headlamp unit has to be removed to change the bulbs it makes the task very easy (especially as I've had to do it several times). Remembering my Rover 75 that involved grovelling around in the wheel arch trying to remove a rusted up hatch. 2013 GS Baltic Blue - part exchanged now for Volvo V40

Thanks all for your help, all in and working now, gave the car a wash in celebration.

I do a 2k to 3k mile a month so lighting is critical.

Next is the MOT and service first week of January!
