United States
High mileage...?

Hello! This is my first post here after hours of research on this great website.

I'm in the United States and have always liked the look of the Land Rover LR2. I know someone who is selling a 2008 LR2 HSE, and can get it for a very good price. The catch is it has 145,000 miles.

Just wondering if this vehicle has the potential to last to 200,000 miles and beyond? I would love to hear from people who have high mileage on their vehicles themselves.

I'm taking the car to a local mechanic to be checked out later today, anything in particular I should look out for?

Also, what is the realistic everyday mpg you get with your LR2?

Thank you!

Hi . There is no reason to believe that the six cylinder engine you get in the USA will not be capable of a high mileage. For the model year that you are looking at the common faults would have been :

Steering rack failure necessitating new rack and reservoir, caused by weld spatter inside the rack as a result of poor manufacturing .

Then the rear differential nose bearing failing , caused by poor design

Lastly failure of the Haldex unit , probably due to the fact that LR don’t list it as a service item, but other vehicles using the same Ford platform , like the Volvo XC60 and other manufacturers like thec VAG group , do have service schedules for the part

Apart from that check that the terrain response system, and hill descent control are working

Other than that lot , the rest of the vehicle mechanics and running gear are pretty much standard FoMoCo, and will either be worn out by the mileage or not, but

You will find very few relplies about MPG from the UK as the majority of Freelander 2 here use the 2.2 Ford PSA Diesel. Some of the guys down under do run petrol cars. If you get any replies about MPG rember to adjust any UK figures as we use the real imperial gallon Laughing of 4.55 litres 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .

Our roads are crap so every 1 km of road we drive on is about 1.5 km of wear & tear! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Mine is now running 201,500 kms (please convert to "miles" yourself Smile )
I will tell you want has been replaced so far

1. Starter --> faulty, was replaced after around 199,000 kms.
2. Engine Mount --> faulty indicated by noisy on passenger side
3. Blower Resistor --> faulty, indicated by uncontrolled blower
4. AC Compressor --> faulty, indicated by hot AC Smile
5. Rear Pinion Bearing on Differential --> this causing noisy on rear side if not replaced
6. Spark Plug --> replaced at 125,000 kms as preventive maintenance
7. serpentine belt --> replaced at 190,000 kms as preventive maintenance (it should be at 167,000 kms actually)
8. brake pad --> consumeable

Now coolant it's start leaking, which I expect since some of component is rubber and it's 10 years old car since production and I live in middle east with heat up to 55 degree celcius during summer Smile

Overall, the product is OK, maintenance is normal

The next plan is to replace transmission oil which is due after 10 years or 250,000 kms

201,500 kms = 125937.5 miles Common sense isn't very common.

United States 2008 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame

My 2008 LR2 is at about 110,000 miles

Here is my expanded list

1. Starter --> faulty, was replaced after around 199,000 kms. - replaced mine earlier this year
2. Engine Mount --> faulty indicated by noisy on passenger side - not replaced on my LR2
3. Blower Resistor --> faulty, indicated by uncontrolled blower - not replaced on my LR2
4. AC Compressor --> faulty, indicated by hot AC Smile - not replaced on my LR2
5. Rear Pinion Bearing on Differential --> this causing noisy on rear side if not replaced - replaced the gear oil and added a magnetic drain plug
6. Spark Plug --> replaced at 125,000 kms as preventive maintenance - replaced mine twice (every 50,000 miles)
7. serpentine belt --> replaced at 190,000 kms as preventive maintenance (it should be at 167,000 kms actually) - Volvo reccomends 150,000 miles, my belt has no crack so I haven't done this yet
8. brake pad --> consumable - replaced front twice and rear once
9. Power steering fluid and reservoir replaced due to noisy heavy steering
10. Battery - replaced twice
11. Fuses - replaced all of my fuses in the engine bay and by the front passengers feet due to corrosion (to prevent electrical gremlins)
12. Relays - replaced several to prevent electrical gremlins
13. Door seal - replace due to wear drivers door only
14. Shift boot and emergency brake gator replaced
15. ATF fluid flushed
16. Brake fluid flushed
17. Front Brake calipers refurbished
18. Coolant replaced

Ask the seller which of these items have been done and use that information to help with the price negotiation

Good Luck

Paul

175k on my 2009. I've done 100k+ of that in the last three years.

Hardly missed a beat - serviced annually rather than every 12k, and only other expense was a rear wiper motor (and tyres and lots of fuel).

Best place to spend a 180 mile round trip commute from the Cumbrian hills.
