Recently joined and excited about getting a FL2 within the next week!

After 3 test drives of other vehicles, I'm meeting a guy at the M25 services near M25 J10 on Thursday to look at his SD4 HSE auto (2012). Having failed to find a FL or 4x4 specialist inspection company and have little faith with the AA/RAC, just wondered if anyone knowledgeable would be willing to meet me there to give it the once over. Have no experience of these and wondered if I'd know if the diff/Haldex unit is on the way out, how the suspension and brakes should feel on one of these etc. Only has 43k on the clock but that doesn't of course mean that it's mechanically perfect. Not sure if I'm allowed to state this but happy to pay ££'s for your time.

Do an HPI check first, ask him to bring some photo ID, check the vin number matches the one on the HPI check and in the V5 (make sure he brings it and check the V5 number tallies with the HPI check), pay as little a deposit as you can get away with and ONLY collect it from the address on the photo ID and in the V5 - don’t agree to him delivering it to you under any circumstances. There are loads of FL2`s for sale out there. I would try and find one that you can see at a reputable garage or a private address where you can verify ownership etc. There is a few members who have vehicles for sale that might also be worth considering. The seller should be able to provide the registration number so that you can get an HPI check done. Again unless it was an established garage I would not be parting with any cash as a deposit but only paying the full amount upon collection. There are too many conmen about to take a chance handing over cash in a car park to a stranger that you might never see again! Good luck anyway in the hunt but take your time and find the right vehicle. What you are proposing sounds way too dodgy!

Thanks for the advice Steve but would do that anyway. I did actually ask him if he's further north at any time to save me travelling so far and he was very accommodating.

Have already checked the vehicle online and will pay for the full check if I go for it. Info online tallies up, MOT's/mileages and even spoke to LR as it has the balance of an approved warranty which is transferable. Also spoke to supplying dealer (from new) re service history and all good (he's the second owner). Deposit will be £100 and will be via direct bank transfer.

dealer adds their cut mainly for warranty, which is rather valuable when buying a FL2

The majority of warranties are worthless when it comes to the crunch. Agreed, the LR approved used warranty is fairly comprehensive which this vehicle already has. It's valid until the end of March 2018 whereby I can renew it myself directly with LR at a cost of £795 pa should I so wish (probably won't and put the money in the repair pot). Learnt this lesson with my M3.

I'd happily buy form a dealer where the price was +£1000, but no more than that. Massive marbled showrooms and expensive furniture to pay for!?

One other question to ask your buyer is this : " have you ever had , or has the car ever had with a previous owner , a repair done outside of warranty to which LR have contributed ? "

The reason I say this , is that LR are pretty good at paying a significant contribution to a major out of warranty claim for something that should not have gone pop at a low mileage. So Differential, Haldex, auto box, etc. However the number of times they will do this is limited. That policy might be of use to you if you don't buy a warranty. I asked him if the car has had any work done/parts replaced other than routine maintenance. He said no. He couldn't of course answer on behalf of the previous/original (lady) owner. However, he bought it at 26k from the original supplying dealer and has continued to use them for servicing in the 18 mths and 17k miles since he had it. Called the dealer and last service in March 17 at 36k which was a type A (full) service. It was MOT'd at the same time with an advisory on a near to the limit rear N/S tyre (why just that side?) which still needs replacing but will of course get two if I buy the car. Already researching tyres and as per usual, its a minefield. From one of the photos I can see that it's the Conti cross contact 235/55/19 105. A lot of tyres appear to have a 101 loading so yet t research this if important. So far, Pirelli Scorpion Verde Allseason and Uniroyal rainsport 3. Yes, it has 19" wheels but the chances of finding the right car that ticks every single box unless buying new is both difficult and time consuming/counter productive.

Having had 5 of these cars in the family so far I for one, wouldn't own one without a full LR warranty and bought from a dealer. It's an expensive car to own and run and I have accepted that. If you want to save a few £s here and there you might have to buy some tablets to help you sleep.  3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
