Nice photos there mate, very well done, Vesko and me were up there around six months ago and you have really caught the magic of the area. What river crossing was that? |

Nice photos, actually got some water there, haven't seen that stuff in Sydney for months now! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

A dirt road a little closer to Sydney is Mt Irvine Road out of the back out Mt Wilson to effectively Bilpin.

There are lots of trips close to Sydney. Newnes is a nice campground especially across the river. The Six Foot Track from Cox's River Road down to the Swing Bridge and back out to Hampton. Abercrombie River National Park, Turon River National Park, Turon Gates to Sofala, Hill End is nice. If you are more adventurous then the Caves to Caves road from Jenolan to Wombeyan. There's also Yerranderrie. Every one of them is a weekend trip with mostly free camping, river crossings, hill climbs and reasonable 4wding.

Thanks Lightwater, I actually think I already did part of that track you are describing, but it was a while ago.

If you've been to Capertee then a half a click out of town on the left is the turn off to Turon Gates. There's a gold mine of scenery, tracks, history, camping and river crossings down through there all the way to Sofala and Hill End. If you're game some of the tracks are very challenging but not compulsory. |

Great stuff, thanks! I will definitely give this one a go, especially the river crossing.

We were on the Bridle Track a few months back. Its blocked by the collapse at Monahans Bluff. We are keen to try Root Hog Crossing as its the bypass, but havent got around to it yet.

Thanks for the heads up. There is also a video of a guy on a bike driving past the collapsed section. Its a shame, because it looks like a beautiful drive. So which way do you reckon it is better to drive, from Turon Gates to Sofala (and then to Hill End or at least up to the Monahans Bluff), or the other way around?

Its a bit of a maze of roads in there. The most direct route involves a very sharp turn towards upper Turon and then going through a couple of gated sections along a 10kph very rough rocky track that follows the river. Otherwise you go over Mt Horrible, yes that's its name. |
