Will a roof box effect the satnav, when its on the roof

I might got the the extra space inside the car and rig a Alona style shelf up and a dog cage to stop the load ending up on my babys lap

You could try one of these. I have one and am impressed, not had it on FL2 yet but it fitted on my SWB Shotgun well.

Big advantage is it opens to both sides of the car, does the Thule one.

Unless you are thinking of carrying a largely radio dense load, eg lead foil, steel sheeting, etc I cant see you having too much of a problem with a plastic roofbox.
You could try covering you sat ariel with a plastic tupperware style box and piling some clothing etc on top and see if the sat nav still works. might be best to try this with the car stationary though

Not apples to apples, but my LR2 works just fine with my windsurfing kit on the rack obstructing the GPS antenna (satellite radio also works good, but not 100%). Don't know how windsurf boards would compare to a cargo box with regard to hindering signal reception but hopefully it's a good indicator!

My Kamei (from www.roofbox.co.uk ) pictured here is huge and doesn't foul the ariel. The SatNav works just fine.

Size is one thing, but there may be other considerations to take into account . If it looks and aerodynamics that have highest importance take a look at Packline FX-SUV http://www.packline.se/En/index.php especially if it is skis and such like you are carrying.

The other Packline products are pretty good as well, but unfortunately on the roof of the FL2, MY garage door opening is too low  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

The performance of portable GPS within the car often surprises me (i.e. just how good it is). I use a TT720 and Garmin Nuvi 200 and both have worked in the car when well away from the windscreen mount, e.g. glove box. Both have the latest SirfsetIII receiver which appears very tolerant of poor signals. Would hope the OEM fit has the same technology and that the roof box doesn't cause you any agro.

No probs at all with it. works best in BLACK not grey.

Got a good deal with it also.
